6 Examples Short placements
Using data from the National Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Audit and the Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre studied variation in critical care admissions post O-G cancer surgery, and whether such variation was associated with differences in outcome(s).  Work involved conducting a literature review, formulating a project proposal, conducting data analysis using STATA, and writing up the observational study for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. (HSRP and RCS) Estimating the likely incremental impact and cost effectiveness of improving or expanding existing Hepatitis B and C testing services in England and Wales (Work involved a literature review, model development, clinician collaboration, and provision of evidence to NICE. (HRSP- Guideline and Economic Evaluation Group)

7 Longer Term Placements
Design of a cluster randomised trial to assess the impact of delivering health education via faith groups on the incidence of childhood diarrhoeal disease. This project has involved literature review, protocol design and submission of applications for funding. (joint project across ITD and PHP faculties) A systematic review of studies that have explored the relationship between food prices and demand. Results synthesised and analysed using meta-regression, to explore how the strength of the relationship differs by the type of food and income levels (within and between countries).Draft paper to be submitted to BMJ. (EPH faculty) Literature review of the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in developing countries, mapping study of the global eye care workforce, developing training course and manual for eye health professionals. (ITD- International Centre for Evidence in Disability)

9 Policy on academic training
