Key Stage 3 Strategy Design and Technology The Axe Valley Community College

Planning

Our plan…..  Half day department INSET in October to launch the strategy.  Trial activities to deliver specific objectives.  Review the success of the trial.  Update schemes of work to include objectives.  Deliver a complete module in Year 7.  Plan for Year 8 and 9.

The INSET day…..  We formally introduced the Strategy, it’s main aims and reviewed the work carried out so far.  We carried out an audit of our Year 7 schemes of work.

An audit of our Year 7 schemes… Areas not covered were identified We then studied the objectives…

The INSET day…..  We linked the objectives for Year 7 with lesson activities, gave examples of activities already trialled and watched some of the video clips.  Each material area identified two objectives which linked in with their current schemes of work.

 Activities to deliver the objectives were planned. Each teacher had to commit to trialling two activities and a follow up date for reviewing their success was agreed.  Finally, we allocated the remaining objectives to each material area. The INSET day…..

Students’ work

Activity trials… Evaluating products of others: An activity carried out with Year 7. Used to gain information which would help when designing hats. Students were able to give importance to specific criteria. Learning objective: Examine, describe and evaluate similar products to gain useful information… Textiles

Activity trials… Generating ideas: Modify the…..basic pizza. An activity carried out with Year 7. Used to generate ideas for improvements / developments prior to selecting criteria for making their own pizza. Learning objective: Use strategies which generate a variety of ideas quickly… Food

Activity trials… Generating ideas: An activity carried out with Year 8. Used to generate ideas for a clock suitable for a young child. The student was able to draw on ideas from other people to help make her design more creative. Learning objective: Produce and consider conventional, original, unusual…….ideas RMT

Activity trials… Modelling ideas through CAD: An activity carried out with Year 7. Used to try out different colour ways. The student drew a basic hat design then copied it a number of times, printed it out then developed her ideas. Learning objective: Work out and reflect on the technical details of their designs… Textiles

Activity trials… Planning as part of a group: An activity carried out by Year 7 This activity was chosen to address a gap in the Year 7 audit (working as part of a team). Students planned a sequence for making a hat to include a time log. Post-it notes were used to record equipment and the time required for each stage. They were then able to make adjustments during the making activity. Learning objective: Prepare an ordered sequence…share decisions about the task… Textiles

Activity trials… Evaluating: That’s where I draw the line. An activity carried out with Year 7. Used to carry out an evaluation of scones made to their own design. Learning objective: Evaluate their products by comparing them against criteria… Food

Evaluation

Reviewing their success… Each teacher was given an evaluation form to fill out for each activity they trialled. Modifications were suggested which will be considered next time the activity is used.
