SEM PLT TECHNOLOGY AND STANDARDS

SEM TECHNICAL OVERVIEW

SEM POWERLINE COMMITTEE (PLT) DESCRIPTION  ETSI TC PLT (excerpt from ToR):  “[...] develop high quality standards and specifications to provide telecommunications services via the existing public and private mains power networks”  “[...] The standards will be developed in sufficient detail to allow interoperability between equipment from different manufacturers and co-existence of multiple powerline systems within the same environment”  ETSI TC PLT is publishing and developing the necessary standards to make sure that PLT successfully coexists with other technologies and services

SEM COMMITTEE DESCRIPTION  A.S.P., ALCATEL S.A., BBC, BMWi, CHTTL, Cisco Systems Belgium, CONEXANT SYSTEMS SAS, Deutscher Amateur Radio Club, DS2, DTI, ECCA, EDF, FED. MINISTRY FOR TRANSPORT, FICORA, France Telecom, IAEI, ICP-ANACOM, INTEL CORPORATION SARL, INTELLON Corporation, LEA, MEDTRONIC BAKKEN RESEARCH, MINISTERO DELLE COMUNICAZIONI, NITA, NOKIA Corporation, Norwegian P & T Authority, NOZEMA, OFCOM, Ofcom (U.K.), PHILIPS Semiconductors, PORTUGAL TELECOM SGPS SA, Power PLUS Communications, Radio Frequency Investigation, SAGEM Group, Schmid Telecom AG, Schneider Electric Powerline, SONY INTERNATIONAL (EUROPE), Spidcom Technologies SA, TDF, TELECOM ITALIA S.p.A., TELEFONICA S.A., TELKOM SA LIMITED, TOSHIBA Electronics Europe, UTIMACO SAFEWARE AG, VACUUMSCHMELZE GmbH

SEM SOME STANDARDS  ETSI Technical Specification (TS) : “Reference Network Architecture Model”  “The present document specifies the network architecture model for PLC (powerline communication) systems. The document defines and specifies all PLC external interfaces. PLC internal interfaces are defined within the document but (if the interfaces are new standards) specified in other documents to which references are given.”

SEM SOME STANDARDS  ETSI Technical Specification (TS) : “Coexistence of Access and In-House Powerline Systems”  “When using the same frequencies, inhouse PLC is visible in the access and might potentially interfere with access PLC. The same situation appears also vice versa as powerlines are a shared medium. Therefore it is essential to specify the co-existence between access and inhouse to protect each service from interference by the other”

SEM SOME STANDARDS  ETSI Technical Report (TR) : “Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for in-house systems”  “The present document contains a definition of Quality of Service (QoS) parameters and QoS requirements for an in-house PowerLine Communications (PLC) network system needed for applications in the home environment (HE). Such a system is here called a PLC home network (PLC-HN). Input to the present document came from company contributions and from ETSI, IEEE, IETF, and ITU-T standards documents. The QoS requirements and definitions are derived from well-known and industry wide accepted standards.”

SEM SOME STANDARDS  ETSI Technical Report (TR) : “PLT Channel characterization and measurement methods”  “The present document applies to measurements of the symmetry behaviour and the attenuation in Low Voltage Distribution Networks (LVDN) within premises. It also covers measurements for magnetic near fields within and in close vicinity of premises resulting from feeding HF-signals into LVDN. The measurements are intended for the measurement campaign of the ETSI Specialist Task Force (STF) 222, which investigates HF characteristics of LVDN relevant for the operation of PLT-systems as well as the hidden node aspect ”

SEM SOME STANDARDS  ETSI TR : “PLT LCL Review & Statistical Analysis”  “EU PLT LCL Review & Statistical Analysis taking into account such matters as Earthing Variations, Country Variations, Operator differences, phasing and distribution topologies, domestic, industrial and housing types along with local network loading”  80 percentile value: 30.7 dB  Basically independent of frequency, geographical area and electrical installation type

SEM SOME STANDARDS  ETSI TR : “PLT EMI Review & Statistical Analysis”  “EU PLT EMI Review & Statistical Analysis taking into account such matters as Earthing Variations, Country Variations, Operator differences, phasing and distribution topologies, domestic, industrial and housing types along with local network loading”  80 percentile value of the coupling factor: dB(µV/m)-dBm  Basically independent of frequency, geographical area and electrical installation type

SEM SOME STANDARDS  ETSI TR : “Radiated emissions' characteristics and measurement method of state of the art powerline communication networks”  “The present document also specifies the measurement method used to characterize the radiated emissions, so that future measurements can be performed using the same method.  The present document reports the radiated emissions' characteristics of powerline communication networks in the frequency range 1,605 MHz to 30 MHz.  The radiated emissions' characteristics presented in the present document cover both access and in-home powerline communication networks.”  80 % of the measurements are below 4 dB(µA/m) quasi- peak, while 100% are below 14 dB(µA/m) quasi-peak)

SEM SOME STANDARDS  ETSI TR : “Hidden Node review and statistical analysis”  “The present document […] investigates the distribution of the Transverse Transfer Loss with respect to the carrier-frequency, to the relative location of the sockets, to the phase conditions between the sockets and to the national LVDN-particularities.” Cumulative probability for the largest continuous window with TTL below k same flat/house k = 10 dB (red), 20d B (green), 30 dB (blue), 40 dB (violet), 50 dB (dark blue), 60 dB (brown), 70 dB (grey), 80 dB (black)

SEM SOME FUTURE STANDARDS  Work Item 5: In-house/In-house Coexistence  Target deliverable type: ETSI Technical Specification  Methodology allowing multiple In-house systems to co- exist in the same network  Work Item 7: Detailed Architecture and Protocols  PLC network reference architecture: PHY layer aspects, MAC layer, convergence layers; QoS mechanisms, etc...

SEM SOME FUTURE STANDARDS  Work Item 9: Programmable PSD mask  Target deliverable type: ETSI Technical Specification  POWER BACK-OFF  NOTCHES  MITIGATION TECHNIQUES  Work Item 10: Dynamical frequency allocation for Access/In-House coexistence
