1 ITU-T Study Group 5 Protection against electromagnetic environment effects in telecommunications
Roberto Pomponi

2 Contents Terms of reference Management Team SG Organization Statistics
Highlights of achievements / International collaborations Workshops Future work Conclusions

3 Terms of Reference SG 5 is responsible for studies relating to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of telecommunication systems including to avoid hazard to human beings Lead SG 5 for: Area 0 “Generic”, Domain 15 “ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC), Protection and Safety

4 Management Team Chair Roberto Pomponi (Italy) Vice-Chairs:
György Varju (Hungary) Ahmed Zeddam (France) WP Chairs: Mitsuo Hattori (Japan) TSB Judit Katona-Kiss COUNTRY: should be the letter acronym, e.g. USA, I (for Italy), J (Japan), etc, as used in the ITU list of participants

5 Study Group Structure WP1 Preventing damages and safety Responsible for studies relating to protection of telecommunication installations in order to reduce damages and achieve safety of telecom personnel and users of telecom services. WP2 Emission, immunity and electromagnetic fields Responsible for studies relating to achieve EMC of telecommunication installations and safety of telecom personnel and population against electromagnetic fields

6 Statistics (I) 2 Rapporteurs meetings held
10 Normal and 51 Delayed contributions received 6 SG and 1 WPs meetings held Max/Min/Average SG participants : 67/52/45

7 Statistics (II) 20 New/Revised Recommendations approved
1 Handbook on “Earthing and Bonding” revised Vol. VI of the Directives “Danger and disturbances” amended Questions during study period: 14 Questions proposed for next period: 16

8 Highlights of achievements (I)
The new ITU-T Rec. K.61 allows the evaluation of the human exposure to electromagnetic fields from telecommu-nication installations by measurements and numerical prediction of these fields; The new ITU-T Rec. K.60 specifies limits for permissible disturbance emissions emanating from wire-line telecommuni-cations networks and suitable methods of measurement applicable for evaluation of individual cases of radio interference under in-situ conditions

9 Highlights of achievements (II)
The new ITU-T Recs. K.56 and K.57 give protection techniques of Radio Base Stations against lightning (K.56) or when installed on power line towers (K.57), whereas the new Recs. K.46 and K.47 show when, how and where the telecommunication network needs lighting protection.

10 Highlights of achievements (III)
The new ITU-T Recs. K.58 and K.59 show how to manage EMC, resistibility and Safety problems for co-located telecommunication installations (K.58) and for unbundled cables (K.59).

11 Highlights of achievements (IV)
The new ITU-T Rec. K.63 gives a methodo-logy to network operator to cheaply and efficiently check the EMC performance of equipment during its acceptance procedures and to manufacturers to perform rapid assessment of a production run, whereas the new Rec. K.62 allows the evaluation of system level radiated emission using mathematical modelling.

12 International Collaboration
With “International Council on Large Electric Systems” (CIGRE); With “International Railway Union” (UIC) With “International Electrotechnical Commission” (IEC) With “World Health Organization” (WHO) With “European Committee for Electromechanically Standardisation (CENELEC) With “European Telecommunications Standards Institute” (ETSI)

13 Workshops (I) EMC, Safety and EMF effects in telecommunications / December 10, 2001 / Hanoi (Vietnam) The workshop, held in connection with a SG 5 meeting, was attended by about 100 people

14 Workshops (II) EMC and EMF in telecommunications / June 28, 2002 / Wroclaw (Poland) The workshop was an invited Technical Panel during the International Symposium on EMC in Wroclaw

15 Future Work (I) A new question on “Security of telecommunication and information systems regarding electromagnetic environment” to protect telecommunication network against electromagnetic threats and to prevent information leakage.

16 Future Work (II) The new Question on “EMC requirements for the Information Society” to study methodologies for predicting and mitigating EMC problems that may prevent from working successfully the complex variety of both wireless and wireline technologies for the exchange of voice and data over traditional telecommunications networks.

17 Future Work (III) A new Question to study the EMC, Resistibility and Safety issues related to the “Home network”, where a number of different wireless (e.g. radio LAN and DECT) and wireline technologies (e.g. LAN, PLT) interconnect a variety of in-home electronic and electrical equipment (such as TV, PC and other household devices), introducing a new family of EMC issues.

18 Future Work (IV) Continuation of Questions dealing with :
Resistibility and Safety requirements Earthing and Bonding techniques Lightning protection of telecommunication installations Human exposure to electromagnetic fields from telecommunication installations EMC requirements for telecommunication equipment

19 Conclusion Compared with the previous Study Period, SG 5 has increased the achieved results in terms of number of new/revised Recommendations and Handbooks For the next Study Period, SG 5 is bringing its core competences into new subjects such as “security”, “information society” and “home network”

20 Optional slide Thank you!
Mr Roberto Pomponi earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic of Turin (Italy) in 1972 and in the same year he joined TILAB (formerly CSELT, Centro Studi e Laboratori Telecomunicazioni in Turin, Italy), where he has carried out activities on protection of telecommunication installations against lightning, electromagnetic interference and safety. He has been professor of EMC seminars at the Polytechnic of Turin, University of Ancona and at High School of the Telecom Italia Group. He is Chairman of the some Italian Technical or Sub-Technical Committees and is Chairman of ITU-T SG 5. Optional slide
