Types Of Tractors Two types of Ag Tractors –Wheel tractors –Crawler tractors Different types and sizes are made for specific types of jobs.

Standard types of Tractors Lawn and garden tractors are usually small and used for mowing and light cultivation jobs around the home, on golf courses and in parks –Ex: Schools tractors has turf tires for mowing Row crop tractors are designed for planting and cultivating row crops such as corn and soybeans.

Standard types cont. Standard wheel tractors are large and suited for open field work Utility tractors are used for a large variety of row crop jobs and for mowing and barnyard work. Orchard and grove tractors are for use in fruit orchards and vineyards.

Standard Tractors cont. Four wheel drive tractors have increased power and traction because both front and rear wheels have power. High or low clearance tractors are either high off the ground to go over tall plants or low to the ground for working in low areas. Tracklayer is a heavy duty tractor that is a crawler with tracks rather than wheels.

Tractor Safety Read and follow operators manual Only one person riding – the operator SMV emblem should be on the rear of any vehicle that goes slower than 25 mph PTO Shields should not be removed If using a Front-end loader, be careful when turning with the loader too high because of the low center of gravity. –Especially in curves

Preventative Maintenance Procedures Should be performed at scheduled intervals –Cars is miles and/or months –Tractors is in hours Check oil and fuel regularly –Too check oil engine should be off and cold Small 2-cycle engines do not have oil filters, so keeping out dust is important.

Preventative Maintenance Procedures cont. Checking the water level and cleaning the radiator are important for the cooling system of tractors and other equip. –Antifreeze in winter Regularly check –Oil –engine and transmission –Water level in radiator and battery –Grease fittings on bearings –Tires for wear or punctures –Brakes and fluid

Servicing Tractors, and Equip Because spark plugs are inexpensive, replace rather than service. Newer small engines DO Not have points but have electronic ignitions Check battery cables for corrosion or tightening of cables.

Servicing Tractors, and Equip A “dry type” air filter is serviced by replacing the filter. A “oil type” air filter is serviced by washing it to remove dirt and then squeezing oil into the filter which is usually foam rubber.

Servicing Tractors, and Equip Since two cycle engines have the fuel and oil mixed together, there is no oil in the crankcase to be checked. It is very important to use the correct fuel to oil ratio when mixing fuel and oil. Before a small engine is stored any length of time, the fuel tank should be empty to prevent “gumming up”

Troubleshooting Read operators manual first An engine must have fuel, ignition, and compression to start and to run. If engine won’t run, –First check fuel in tank –Then check to see if fuel is getting to carburetor If engine turns over and has fuel, then the spark should be checked.

Troubleshooting If the engine will not turn over, the battery should be checked. If the engine turns over, has fuel, and has spark, then the compression should be checked. The service manual will have compression specifications.

Troubleshooting Since two cycle engines have a fuel and oil mixture at a certain ratio, the first thing that should be checked if the engine won’t work is the fuel mixture. –Just pour out old and add new mixture During Troubleshooting, remember to think logical and use common sense.
