What is the Difference??? Which one would you own???

Maintenance Learning Aims – Learn about Products that require maintenance and why maintenance is important. PLTS – For this task you will be Effective Participators as you find out about Maintenance

Tyres Name 3 areas of maintenance that should be carried out on tyres 1…………………………………………… …………………………………………….. Reason…………………………………… ……………………………………………… 2…………………………………………… …………………………………………….. Reason…………………………………… ……………………………………………… 3…………………………………………… …………………………………………….. Reason…………………………………… ………………………………………………

Suspension Complete the following: The Suspension struts are filled with, If any is leaking from the strut, then the rubber Has perished Why is it important that the shock absorber is working properly? Oil seal

Brake Systems Friction is our friend when it comes to brakes as it generates heat which aids stopping power. However too much heat causes reduced braking effect, as disks can warp What do the vents and the drilled holes help to do? Friction Pads must be checked for condition and thickness Vented Disk Brakes

Lubricants - Engine Oil Complete the following: The parts inside the engine must be with Oil to reduce friction which generates, which in turn causes parts to expand and rub together and eventually seize. Friction is a problem in engines as it causes heat and wear. Therefore oil is pumped around the engine, to create a thin film of lubricant between moving parts Why must engine oil levels be checked regularly?

Lubricants - Grease Describe how the grease will work in the bearings above? Greases are applied to mechanisms that can only be lubricated infrequently and where a lubricating oil would not stay in position. They also act as sealants to prevent ingress of water and incompressible materials Bearings make the car wheels rotate smoothly and efficiently

Air Filter An engine needs oxygen to operate – it is ignited by the spark plug As the engine draws in air, the air filter stops unwanted particles entering the engine, that could cause damage and wear! Why is it important to replace damaged, or clean dirty air filters Name a specific plastic that the air filter casing could be made from?

Fuel Tank and Fuel Lines The fuel tank stores highly flammable fluids that are used to help ignite the oxygen in the engine Why is it important to check the condition of the fuel tank and lines? Fuel lines transport fuel from the fuel tank to the engine

Cleaning Cleaning is important, as it helps maintain condition, by removing contaminants that could cause damage or corrosion. Which in turn will aid performance and resale value Why is it important to remove contaminants such as salt from metal parts on vehicles?

Batteries Batteries must be checked and either, replaced or recharged, depending on the type for effective operation. They provide a range of functions on vehicles. Describe some of the functions that batteries undertake on vehicles?

Test your Knowledge, What would you check for on the following areas? Tyres Chain and sprocket Front suspension forks Front Brake Disks and Pads Fuel Tank Engine Oil Brake and Clutch Cables (2 Marks) (3 Marks) (2 Marks) Air Filter (2 Marks)

Maintenance - Conclusions Write down 2 questions to ask each other about why we should carry out maintenance! Q2 Why is regular Maintenance important (3 Marks)
