Vehicle Maintenance, daily Checks Daily checks-Tyres check for obvious faults i.e flat tyres, worn tyres, visible damage. Daily checks-Tyres check for obvious faults i.e flat tyres, worn tyres, visible damage. Lights and indicators- should all be in working order and clean Lights and indicators- should all be in working order and clean Windscreen and windows- clean them were necessary Windscreen and windows- clean them were necessary Washer bottle-keep it topped up Washer bottle-keep it topped up Brakes-as soon as possilbe after moving off, check they are working properly Brakes-as soon as possilbe after moving off, check they are working properly

Changing A Wheel Remember, never get under the vehicle while it is only supported by a Jack. Make sure the vehicle is on level ground, the hand brake is applied, or the wheels are chocked. Never remove the wheel nuts (lug nuts) before fully jacking up the vehicle.

Under Bonnet Levels

Write Down What You Think Is Being Checked

Inspect the tyre tread and side walls for large cuts, abrasions or bubbles. Tyre pressures are checked when the tyre is cold. Remember the tyre tread depth must be not less than 1.6mm over the central three-quarters of the tyre and must go all the way round the circumference in an continuous unbroken band with no bald patches anywhere on the tyre tread

Lubrication

Oil And Filter Change

Oil and Filter change Using the pictures below, write down how you would carry out a oil and filter change, make sure you state all safety precautions you would take

Checking And Topping Up The Cooling System Remember, never remove the radiator or expansion tank cap while the engine is hot. Check for leaks if continuous topping up is required. Check how much anti-freeze is present in the system

Coolant (mixture of water and antifreeze) change Using the pictures below, write down how you would carry out a coolant change, make sure you state all the safety precautions you would take

Ignition Systems Describe how you would change a set of Spark Plugs, use the pictures to help you explain what you are doing

The Braking System Drum Brakes - When you press the brake pedal, fluid is pumped along the brake pipes from the master cylinder into the wheel cylinders. The wheel cylinders pistons force the brake shoes against the drum. Disc Brakes – with disc brakes the hydraulic action is the same as with the drum brakes, but the hydraulic pistons clamp the brake pads on to the disc

All lights should be checked to see if they are in correct working order. The windscreen wipers and washers must clean the windscreen

Note – failure of the Timing Belt normally results in expensive engine damage, you must not attempt to replace this belt unless you fully understand the procedure.

Note – only the correct type of oil can be used to top up the transmission (gearbox and axle)

The Exhaust System You must never run the engine without proper ventilation, exhaust gases are poisonous (deadly), remember, the exhaust system gets very hot
