Mr. Fleming

 When:1820  Who: Hans Oerstad  What: ◦ Discovered that running an electrical current near a compass causes it to move from magnetic north towards current. ◦ When current stopped, compass turned back towards magnetic north.

 What is it? ◦ Production of a magnetic field by current flowing in a conductor.

 How is an electromagnet made? ◦ An electrical current produces a magnetic field like a magnet. ◦ Coil a current carrying conductor around a magnetic object.  Wire around magnet is called a solenoid

1.)# of Coils  The more coils around magnet, the stronger the magnet becomes. 2.) Amount of Current  The more current sent through wires around magnet, the stronger the magnet.

3.) Material magnet is made of ◦ Ferromagnetic material (Iron, Nickel, Cobalt) 4.) Size of magnet ◦ Bigger magnet produces stronger magnet

 Electromagnet is like regular bar magnet when current is flowing.  Direction of the poles of the magnet are determined by direction of current.

 DDrU DDrU 1.Generator or alternator in a car 2. small motors around the workshop of a house, such as electic drill, router, electric sander.

3. kitchen appliances, such as blender, food processor, vacuum cleaner, wash machine, dryer Electric shaver. 4. Giant electrical generators in hydro (water) power plants that generate electricity on a large scale.

1.) A magnetic field is generated anytime _______ flows through a conductor. Current 2.) Wrapping a wire around a magnet creates a __________. Solenoid

3.) The direction of the poles of a magnet is determined by the direction of the ____________ Electrical Current
