2 Electromagnetism When electricity passes through a metal wire it creates a strong electric current and a magnetic field. This device is known as an solenoid. A nearby compass will react to the magnetic field.

3 Electromagnetism If a solenoid is wrapped around a magnetic metal (e.g., iron, cobalt, or nickel) it will create an electromagnet.
