Muscular Systems Health Workbook Body Systems

 Identify and describe the structure and function of the major body systems.  Analyze the interdependence existing among the body systems.  All pictures are from Pennsylvania State Standards

 Explain the different parts and functions of the muscular system.  Identify the different types of muscle fibers.  Explain how muscles work.  Analyze the interdependence existing among the body systems. What you will learn!

 What has happen to your muscles when you over work them.  Describe how muscles are like taffy? Warm-up Activity

Vocabulary  600 Muscles  Muscular system –Group of structures that make up your large muscle groups.  Skeleton – Muscle attached to bone.  Smooth – Found in organs and blood vessels and glands.  Cardiac – Found only in the walls of the heart.

 Muscle cells are elongated (muscle cell = muscle fiber)  Contraction of muscles is due to the movement of microfilaments  All muscles share some terminology  Prefix myo refers to muscle  Prefix mys refers to muscle  Prefix sarco refers to flesh Characteristics of Muscles

 What is the compare and contrast between smooth muscle, and Skeleton muscle.  Make a vein diagram 10-2

 Produce movement  Maintain posture  Stabilize joints  Generate heat Function of Muscles

 You have muscle to move your body around.  There is muscles that you do not control like your heart, and intestine.  What then tells these muscles to move?  Type of Muscle Movement  Involuntary- Automatically move without you knowing.  Voluntary- Brain sends message to muscle. You control the movements. Muscle Movement

 Muscle stimulated by nerves and work by contracting and relaxing.  Muscle work in pairs, with one muscle contracting other is shorting.  This helps stabilize the joint and have a smooth movement. Muscles work

 Discuss with your neighbor the following:  Function of muscle  Muscle movement  How the muscle work  Your choice, but you will have to discuss with the class. Talk to your Neighbor

Smooth muscle!  Smooth – Is found in the organs, with the blood vessels, and glands. They work on an involuntary action. You do not need to think for it to happen. Where is smooth muscle found in the human body?

Skeletal muscles  Muscle that attached to bone that enables you to move your body. There is over 20 major muscle in your body.  If we did not have muscle what would we look like and how would we move?  Do “Skeletal muscle and working pairs ” in human workbook. Page 12  Picture is from Google.com

Cardiac muscle  This is involuntary, this is only found in your heart. It moves blood out through the body. This is how your oxygen and nutrition are moved to cell of your body.  Picture is from Google.com

 Do the following: “Your muscles” page 10“ and Muscle Man” page 11 This is a review of the three different types of muscle cells! In the human workbook

Heart is made of four chambers  The heart makes up the one piece of the circulatory system. Picture is from Google.com

Four chambers are  Right and left Atrium  Right and left Ventricle. ~In between the Atriums and Ventricle there are valves. ~ These valves open up and blood moves between the Ventricles and Atriums. ~ Atriums always feed the Ventricles. ~ The heart flows in one direction, so it is called a one way flow. Picture is from Google.com

 With your partner or group! Discuss the following questions.  What are the two types of chambers of the heart? What is a way to remember the chambers? Think pair share

 Pulled or torn muscle – Torn away from the bone or has been damaged within itself.  Muscle strain – type of soreness that develops in a muscle that is overused.  Muscle cramp – remains contracted rather then relaxed.  Muscle dystrophy – disorder that is unusually inherited. It weakens skeleton muscle. Problems with the muscular system

 Physical activity – More you use your muscle the stronger they become.  Warm – up – Before exercise and have cool down.  Eat foods balanced in vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates.  Have a healthy weight. Extra weight can strain the muscle like the back!  Learn to lift correctly! Bend knees back straight and use your leg muscles to lift, and keep the load close to your body! Care for the Muscular system!

 Fill in the question of the muscle fish. This is a review of the notes you have taken. Muscle fish

Review your answers on “MUSCLE MAN”

 Use the following paragraph guides to write your paper. Explain how the muscle system needs the other body systems that we have covered.  First paragraph – what is the muscle system.  Second paragraph- Describe the different muscles in the system. Type of muscles  Third paragraph – What is the job of these muscle  In conclusion, the muscle system needs the nervous system! W.I.L.T.
