Tutor – Abi Wadsworth Session 1

In this unit, you will learn about the ways in which growth and development are interlinked. This interlinking is why we often talk about children’s ages, as well as their stages of development. You will learn about children’s development in five broad areas: physical, cognitive, language, emotional and social, and will see how these areas of development are interlinked. Session 1

A. Understand how the principles of growth and development apply to children’s developmental progress from birth up to 8 years Session 1

Aim: To understand growth and development of children Learning objectives:  Discuss the difference between growth and development  Identify the 5 main areas of children’s growth development  Reflect of your own personal growth and development Session 1

Skills that are looked for as children develop, usually linked to age Developmental milestones A life course is a map of what is expected to happen at the various stages of the human cycle Life course Development of movements that involve the use of the whole limb. Gross motor development Movements of the hands and wrists Fine motor development A rapid automatic response to a stimulus. Reflexes A general stage of lifespan development that includes puberty. Adolescence An increase in some measured quantity, such as height or growth Growth Complex changes including an increase in skills, abilities and capabilities Development Description of an average set of expectations with respect to an infant or child’s development Development Norms John Aston Key Terms 1 for Unit 4 Session 1

 Every child is a unique individual with their own characteristics and temperament.  Development is a continuous, complex interaction of environmental and genetic factors in which the body, brain and behaviour become more complex.  Babies and children mature at different rates and at different times in their lives.  Babies and children are vulnerable and become resilient and confident if they have support from others.  Early relationships strongly influence how children develop and having close relationships with carers is very important. Session 1
