What is the Western World? Generally speaking the Western world typically refers to European civilizations, societies and cultures AND those derived there from. Historians often see Classic Greece as the foundation of western thoughts and ideals. However, we will see how interconnected the ancient world truly was as we take look at the distant past.

What are the Humanities? The humanities are the stories, the ideas and the words that help us make sense of our lives and our world. The humanities introduce us to people we have never met, places we have never visited and ideas that may have never crossed our minds. The humanities help us address the challenges we face together.

Cultural-Epoch Theory of Culture Information A culture is founded upon whatever conception of reality is held by the greatest majority if it’s people over a considerable period of time. Aka the acceptance of the nature of reality. Periods of Chaos Periods of Adjustment Periods of Balance

Historical Perspective Without historical perspective the intelligent study of the past is impossible; it is unwise to look at the distance past solely through modern eyes. Of course that is naturally how students process information in many disciplines, but in history we must have a dual approach. We must learn to separate ourselves from modern viewpoints and biases in order to gain a finer understanding of history. However, our modern perceptions are what make us who we are, we will work together to view and interpret the material through modern and historical perspective to give meaning to the subject matter.

History is boring, why should I study the past? History is cyclical in nature. We must strive to look at the past, in order to understand our present. How else can we look to the future? Oh, yeah and history is not boring! It is a fascinating exploration of wonderful civilizations and dynamic individuals.
