Objective AIM- provide an overview of Common Core standards in order to assist teachers in planning and delivering instruction and assessment based on the Common Core Standards.

Today’s focus Begin to identify the differences and similarities between the existing CA state content standards adopted in 1997 and the Common Core standards which will be fully implemented in 2014.

Video Watch a video that provides an overview of the Common Core initiative

Task Working in grade level groups (special education teachers choose a grade level to work with) compare your current grade level standards with the Common Core. Create a visual chart or graphic (ex. Venn Diagram). Be prepared to share your findings with the whole group.

Share Choose one person from your group to share your findings. If you did not have time to complete your visual representation then please share a few highlights from your group’s discussion.

Evaluation Today’s PD was informative. (1-5) I understand some of the similarities and differences between state content standards and Common Core. (1-5) Today’s PD will increase my capacity as a teacher. (1-5) I liked the format of today’s PD. (1-5) Is there anything that you would change in either the content or format of this PD? Suggested Follow Up Activities Read the Common Core standards Examine current student work samples against the criteria in the Common Core grade-specific standards and reach agreement of exemplars of proficient work. Examine current units of study and determine what it will take to “ramp up” the level of rigor and thinking expected in both standards and assessments.

Next Steps and Closing Our next Common Core PD is on 11/27. Our focus will be on identifying current resource materials in our school’s literature collection that illustrate the complexity, quality, and range of student reading at various grade levels.
