Children of World war II………………3 Evacuation…………………………………….4 D Day……………………………………………….5 AIR RAID SHELTER……………………………6 RATIONING……………………………………….7 THE END…………………………………………..8

Children were massively affected by World War Two. At the start of World War Two Nearly two million children were evacuated from their homes. Children had to endure rationing, gasmask lessons & living with strangers. When children were evacuated from their homes many travelled by train.

What was evacuation? At the start of the Second World War, millions of children living in big cities and towns were moved temporarily from their homes to places considered safer, usually out in the countryside. Children had labels attached to them, as though they were parcels. They often felt scared about being away from their families. How do you think the children are feeling in the photo above? What do you think they have packed in their bags?

D Day On June 6 th 1944 one of the most important battle of World War II began. Look at the video for more information.

Air Raid Shelter An air raid shelter is discovered in Surrey under a school playground. For more information about this air raid shelter then watch these 2 videos

Rationing in Britain during World War 2 During World War II all sorts of essential and non-essential foods were rationed, as well as clothing, furniture and petrol. Why was rationing introduced? Why was food rationed in Britain in World War II? Before the Second World War started Britain imported about 55 million tons of food a year from other countries. After war was declared in September 1939, the British government had to cut down on the amount of food it brought in from abroad as German submarines started bombing British supply ships. There was a worry that this would lead to shortages of food supplies in the shops so the British government decided to introduce a system of rationing. Second World War When was rationing introduced? In 8 January 1940, bacon, butter and sugar were rationed. Everyone was issued with ration books. How long was food rationed for? Rationing of food lasted for 14 years and finally ended in July What were ration books? They were books which contained coupons that shopkeepers clipped out of the books when people bought food and other items. (Pictures of ration books)Pictures of ration books Why did they issue ration books? To make sure that everybody got a fair share of food, such as meat, jam, tea, cheese, flour and sugar.
