The aim of education data management is to: Save resources (at school level and in districts) – Use and update one data source – Operational data to be used by more educational programmes for APP/ MTSF reporting – Use electronic data – no recapturing of existing data (reduce errors with recapturing) – Use data system that links different data fields – Use data can be networked Up-to-date data – Use operational data vs survey data – More frequent uploads Apply better data quality assurance – Use systems with built in data integrity – Use electronic tools for data verification – Improve accountability on district level – Employ technical personel for db support and quality assurance AIM ---Education Data Management

SA –SAMS is currently operational in more than 96% of the schools (excluding schools in WC who uses CEMIS for reporting) as shown in the table below. Challenges are being addressed at different levels and by different interventions. The following challenges however have to be addressed in the short and long term: Administrative staff at schools to support SA-SAMS; Circuit/District Systems Administrators to assist schools with SA-SAMS; Rolling out and training by Provinces of SA-SAMS to all schools. Funding: To change SA-SAMS into a Web-based System Funding: National to maintain and develop new requirements on LURITS. Provinces to address the key priorities using their full EMIS Earmarked Funds 9 CHALLENGES

DATA PROVIDED FROM SA-SAMS INCLUDES: Operational data to support the following directorates with their APP reporting: – School Safety, School Enrichment Programmes, School Sport, School Health and the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP); – School Infrastructure; and – School Governance, School Evaluation and Educator Appraisals. SA-SAMS is aligned with the CAPS and ANA policies, including a promotion functionality to provide Curriculum and ANA Validation functions of required data and the SA-SAMS data quality assurance tool has been enhanced to ensure improved data quality provided on LURITS. ADVANTAGE OF USING SA-SAMS/LURITS Standardises the data required for school reporting and ensures the correct implementation of education policies – ONE SOURCE/SET OF DATA PROVIDED THROUGH LURITS. Save resources at school level by reducing duplication of data reported by schools. The provinces will also save time and resources using existing and sustainable data collection CHALLENGES – FUNDING to maintain SA-SAMS on new technology SA-SAMS is developed on an obsolete platform and needs to be updated to SQL or other format.
