Unit 8 Spelling Subject: Language Arts

Words that mean “words”: Words that have opposite meanings; Hot is the antonym of cold. Words that have nearly the same meanings; Compute is a synonym of calculate. A list of words; glossary

Punctuation words: Used in contractions and for possession Susie’s book Don’t smoke. Used to separate ideas or elements within a sentence Our flag is red, white, and blue. Used to connect parts of a compound word or between syllables at the end of a line Old-fashioned

Literary element words: Individual in a literary composition A series of events; a plan of the story General ideas or points that the story is teaching you

Words of different genre: Story coming down from the past Writing not invented by someone’s imagination Imaginative writing using meaning, sound, and rhythm A play

Poetic words: A section/division of a poem that consists of lines arranged together A line or lines of writing with rhythm and/or meters in a song or poem

Grammatical words: A type of sentence that asks a question To change and/or limit meaning She has a red hat. The adjective “red” modifies the noun “hat”.

Other “words”: Work (writing) that contains information on all branches of knowledge Writing with its subject from a limited or personal point of view Specific focus of writing; like a topic sentence

Bonus words: Like in the dictionary; diction means to pronounce The study of language

Don’t forget: Your homework is due Wednesday, but you may turn it in early if you wish. The test for this unit will be given on the first day of next week at the beginning of the period. Remember to bring your paper and a pencil! Study for the test. If you need help, please ask. THERE WILL BE A SEPARATE VOCABULARY QUIZ ON THE REGULAR 20 WORDS ON THIS LIST. KNOW THE MEANINGS OF EACH AND THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM. THEQUIZ WILL BE THIS FRIDAY!
