3 Phonics/Spelling Rule 1  When you have a vowel and a consonant with a silent e at the end, the vowel will have a long sound. A long vowel sound says the name of the vowel: “a” as in ale; “e” as in eve; “i” as in ice; “o” as in old; and “u” as in cube.

5 Phonics/Spelling Rule 2  When you have a vowel and two of the same consonants, the Vowel will have a short sound. Short vowel sounds: “a” as in add; “i” as in ill; “o” as in odd; and “u” as in up
