A video of a home being constructed by a CTE Technical Center was shown at their open house. The video showed evidence of several safety violations.

A member of the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (VDOLI) observed the local school division’s video in February 2004 and requested an official meeting with the Virginia Department of Education.

1. OSHA 500 workshops for all secondary construction teachers. 2. First Aid/CPR training for all secondary construction teachers. 3. Communication to all school superintendents concerning safety.

1. Each Career and Technical Program shall comply with state and federal laws related to health and safety standards. 2. Each Career and Technical Program shall include health and safety standards/instruction.

Nationwide 80% of teens work before graduation. Every 3 minutes a teen worker is injured. Every 7 minutes a teen worker is hospitalized. Every 5 days a teen worker dies.

1. Teachers demonstrate how to safely use all equipment and students pass a test with 100% accuracy. 2. Students must be trained in safety and earn an industry certification such as the OSHA 10 card. 3. Teachers and students sign and date all paperwork associated with the safety training.

Basic safety is the same for everyone; it applies to every job in the market place whether a student works on a construction site or in an office or retail business. There are safety issues everywhere, and it is important that the students be made aware of safety considerations in their work environment.

80% of all teens will work in the market place before graduation. According to the Department of Labor, there are over 20 million youth employed between the ages of 16 and 24.

Instruction in fire safety, types of, and use of fire extinguishers. Dangers of hot surfaces and steam sources. Whether pizza ovens, brewing coffee, or grease fires, students need to be aware of their environment.

Wiping up a spill is important, but what you use to wipe or clean it with is also important. Bleach, ammonia, or other cleaners, if mixed, can cause irritation or worse.

Noise of any type can be hazardous whether at work or at a concert. Instruction in the use and need for ear protection is important.

Look out for trip hazards, open file cabinets, hole punches, and even elastic bands. Let’s look at an example of this.

The leading cause of accidents is not faulty equipment, it’s not operator error, it’s horseplay. Workers getting bored and thinking it would be fun to pull a stunt on a co-worker. Let’s look at an example of this.
