The Fourth Tuesday ─ We Talk About Death ─ We Talk About Death Unit Two Extension Activity

Tuesdays with Morrie is a book about youth and wisdom, life and death, having and giving, holding on and letting go. Now, it has been turned into a three-hanky movie. By watching the movie, more people have an opportunity to examine their life through introspective analysis.

tuesdays with Morrie T he book is the chronicle of Mitch’s time spent with his beloved professor. To return the favor, Mitch wrote the book to help pay Morrie’s medical bills. It spent four years on the New York Times Bestseller list and is now the most successful memoir ever published.

Meet the Author

Mitch Albom Mitch Albom (1958─) is an American best-selling author. He is also a journalist, screenwriter, dramatist, radio and TV broadcaster, and musician.

Mitch is best known for the inspirational stories and themes that weave through his books, plays, and films. Now he is well-known for his philanthropic work in Detroit, Michigan where he founded 4 charities.

Journalist & Broadcaster In 1985, he moved to Detroit and became a nationally-acclaimed sports journalist at the Detroit Free Press. Even now, he still hosts a daily talk show on local radio and appeared regularly on ESPN Sports Reporters and Sports Center. More

Marriage In 1995, he married Janine Sabino. That same year he re-encountered his teacher Morrie Schwartz. His visits with Morrie would lead to the book Tuesdays with Morrie, which made Mitch begin his new career as an internationally recognized author. Mitch & Janine

The Five People You Meet in Heaven T he book (2003) recounts the life and death of an old maintenance man named Eddie. Trying to save a little girl, Eddie lost his life and found himself in heaven where he encountered five people who have significantly affected his life.

For One More Day T he novel (2006) is like Mitch’s previous works (Tuesdays with Morrie & The Five People You Meet in Heaven), it features mortality as a central theme. It tells the story of a troubled man and his mother, and explores how people might use the opportunity to spend a day with a lost relative.

Have a Little Faith T he book (2009) is based on two separate sets of conversations and faiths that took place between the author and members of the clergy: a rabbi in a relatively affluent section of New Jersey, and a Protestant minister in a very poor section of Detroit. Mitch himself, different from these two faiths, writes about another faith can make in the world.

Philanthropic Work Albom has founded 4 charities, many in the metropolitan Detroit area. He and his wife now are dedicated to the safety, education, health and spiritual development of local and overseas areas. Now, they live in Detroit, MI.

Reflect on Morrie’s comment, “Everybody’s gonna die. Even you. But most people don’t believe it.” Question 1 Can you accept that you will die at any time? Why?

According to Morrie, how can one ever be prepared to die? Question 2

“Learn how to die, and you learn how to live.” Question 1 What does the statement mean?

Question 3 Does the statement apply to you? Why?
