Presentation transcript:

Monday, November 4, 2013 Bellringer: Please sit in your desk, take out a piece of paper, and individually write a paragraph to answer the following question: What might a lawyer need to do in order to win a court case?

What should a lawyer do or use?  He or she should collect evidence.  He or she should use prior knowledge.  He or she should use these two components to back up his or her claims

How did Elle prove her client wasn’t guilty?

Writing an Expository Essay! Expository essay  genre of essay that makes you to investigate an idea, find evidence to back it up, elaborate on the evidence, and present a clear argument. Like being a lawyer.

Writing an Expository Essay! YOU NEED A THESIS STATEMENT!

What is a Thesis Statement? A “thesis statement” is a lot like a “topic sentence,” but for your whole essay. Whatever you say in your paper, it should support your thesis. You can usually find a thesis statement at the end of the introduction.

How can I build a thesis statement? Thesis statements have 2 parts: The Topic Your Position, or what you think about the topic. You should have 3 points in your essay.

Let’s look at some examples!

1.Cats can see in the dark. 2.Cats are super cuddly! 1.Without a doubt, cats are beautiful, easy to care for, and great company.

These celebrities of the animal kingdom have been featured everywhere from Broadway to King Tut’s tomb! Without a doubt, cats are beautiful, easy to care for, and great company. Where is the thesis statement? What are the three main points of the paper that follows?

Let’s try one together… What would make school less boring?

Now that we can build a thesis statement together, you’ll be able to fix some!

Time to think about our papers… Directions: Read the speeches written by two students running for class president. As you read the speeches, think about which student would get your vote and why. Then use the speeches to help you write a well-organized multi-paragraph composition.

Let’s wrap up… What do you need to make a good thesis statement? What are the minimum number of points you need to make a good argument?

Homework Finish your introduction and thesis statement for tomorrow!
