40 minutes 10 minutes to understand the prompt and passage 10 minutes to plan out your essay 20 minutes to write it

First understand the prompt What are you supposed to do in this essay? Which of the three essays is this? Passage Use Toulmin’s model Evidence / Data Warrants / Beliefs (these can be spoken or unspoken) Claim / Thesis There may be more than one claim, but only one thesis You must understand what the passage is really saying, because you have to respond to it.

You cannot just jump into it. You need to plan it. What will be your thesis? Three ways to attack the issue: Their data Their warrants Their thesis How will you go about proving your ideas? What ideas will help prove your point? Are you looking at both sides of the issue? Are you only prove your point right, but not other points wrong?

Did you prove your point? Did your point do what the prompt asked?

Your introduction needs: An engaging introduction A preview of your main points A thesis Body Paragraphs Use Claim, Data, Commentary formula Try to use quotes from the passage Current events Personal experiences that cannot be proven any other way Conclusion State your thesis Sum up your points Give a clincher
