BACKGROUND  Established in 1959 – non-profit, volunteer organization;  Adopted principles of IFE (Institute of Fire Engineering) Methodology, Curriculum, Training & Qualifications;  Emergency Services in South-Africa followed the British model for fire fighting and rescue services;  British home office manuals of firemanship were the prescribed books; 3

BACKGROUND cont.  Adopted the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards in 1994;  As a qualification requirement ;  For fire fighting models, strategies & operational tactics;  Received several levels of IFSAC (International Fire Services Accreditation Congress) accreditation;  IFSTA (International Fire Services Training Association) prescribed books are adopted for training purposes;  Biggest Fire and Emergency Services Professional Institute in the Southern Africa (membership ± 4 200). 4

VISION SAESI, a Professional Emergency Services Organization, dedicated to the protection of life, property and the environment MISSION To constitute a member driven professional organization, to promote the safety of the community and the aspirations of its members through the promotion of all aspects of Emergency Services 5

PURPOSE & ROLES  Play a significant role in providing technical information to all spheres of Government;  Fire & Emergency Services Fraternity;  Institutions of Higher Learning;  Training, Capacity building and Empowerment of Members and Non-members; 6

OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTE  We are a professional body which strive to;  Exercise and maintain control over the standards within the field of practice of Emergency Services;  Promote and enhance the image of the profession;  Establish and maintain the Emergency Services profession as a profession in its own right;  To serve as a central point for information collection and dissemination iro the Emergency Services Fraternity; 7

OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTE cont.  To publish and distribute books, pamphlets, periodicals and articles in support of the Emergency Services Career and objectives of the Institute;  To conduct research, convene conferences, symposia, seminars and forums;  Participate in the formulation of Emergency Services legislation, policies and procedures;  Serve as subject matter experts and to give advice to Government and other stakeholders;  To strive for closer co-operation and working relations with national, international organizations and institutes in matters of common interest. 8
