3 What is ICN? The International Council of Nurses (ICN) was founded in 1899 with Great Britain, the United States, and Germany as charter members. The ICN is governed by a Council of National Representatives (CNR) ICN is a federation of more than 130 national nurses associations (NNAs), representing the more than 16 million nurses worldwide ICN is the world’s first and widest reaching international organization for health professionals.

4 Structure of ICN The headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland.
Its governing body is the Council of National Representatives (CNR) made up of the president of each member country (on the principle of one country one vote’), board of Governors consisting of the: President 3 vice presidents and 12 other members elected by the council CNR meet every two years to determine policy matters affecting the nursing profession.

5 Structure cntd….. The nurse accompanying the National Representative of a member association may participate in meetings of the CNR but has no right to vote except when acting as the authorised proxy for the national representative. The CNR meets every two years at a venue decided by the Board after considering applications from countries expressing an interest in hosting a CNR meeting. The ICN Congress is attached to the CNR every four years.

7 Functions Of ICN ICN works: to ensure quality nursing care for all.
to improve the advancement of nursing knowledge ICN also formulates the code of ethics of nurses. Promote the development of strong national nurses association Assist national nurses association to improve standard of nursing and competence of nurses Assist national association improve the status of nurses within a country Serve as the authoritative voice of nurses and nursing internationally.

8 Code of ethics The ICN code of nurses is the foundation for ethical nursing practice throughout the world. It was adopted by ICN in 1953 and revised and completed in 2012. It has four principal elements that outline the standards of ethical conduct of nurses. Nurses and people Nurses and practice Nurses and the profession Nurses and co-workers

9 Funding of icn ICN derives around 80% of its funding from membership dues, which is used to cover core responsibilities along with administrative and governance functions.  It also relies on grants or donations from other foundations, corporates and governments to cover programming, special projects, conferences and congresses, awards and fellowships.
