Instructional Plan Template | Slide 1 AET/515 Instructional Plan Cultural Diversity in Health Science Barry L. Rimpsey

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 2 Needs Assessment 1.What is the learning problem or opportunity? Current Health Science programs do not address the Cultural Issues which effect Health Care. 2.What is currently available? A search of the top bachelor and masters health programs indicates they do not have an applicable program for students. 3.What should be available? An advanced Training Program class needs to be put in place to teach students the tools required to deal with patients with Cultural Issues. 4.Explain the gap analysis between what is available and what should be available. College students are only taught the basic of health sciences, which does not prepare the student properly for real world cultural obstacles. 5.What is your recommended solution for filling the gap? Prepare a 1 hour training class that will demonstrate to students how to properly deal with patients with Cultural Issues.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 3 Instructional Goal After completing the Cultural Diversity Issues training class the student will be able to properly familiarize the student with current and cultural issues in health care that may impact the patient, the health care system, as well as the ability to deliver high quality health care. The student will demonstrate the following learning goals when the training class is complete: What is Culture. Why is Cultural Diversity a Positive Thing. What are Causes of Cultural Misunderstanding and Issues. Developing a Positive Plan. How to Make a Difference.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 4 Performance-Based Objectives The Students will be introduced via classroom instruction to the core principles and best practices for cultural diversity. 1.Students will demonstrate the ability to identify what is culture and the causes of cultural misunderstandings. 2.Students will demonstrate the ability to identify recognized cultures in a quiz format. 3.Students will demonstrate how conflict and disagreement can me managed and resolved. 4.Students will pass end of course test with NLT an 85% Grade.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 5 Summative Assessment and Learning Outcomes The Students will be evaluated in their knowledge to blend conflict-resolution theories, models, and skills into realistic strategies that can be utilized in a healthcare setting. The Use of Case Study will be a real world problem and provide an example for the students, which will be modeled and designed to measure whether the Performance Based Objectives were achieved.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 6 Learner Characteristics The Cultural Diversity training class will consist of students, male or female students, and of age 18 to 55. The students will be taught in a classroom setting. Prerequisite skills for the student needs to include at least 1-5 years of experience working in Health Science. The students must have access to a modern PC running Windows 7 and have access to the Internet.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 7 The Cultural Diversity training class will be taught in a classroom setting. The class will be 1 hour in duration. The class will not be offered via an online classroom setting. The student must have a modern PC that is capable of running the design and development tools. The student must have access to the Internet. The classroom setting will include a typical instructor led lecture that will introduce the student basics of Cultural Diversity. The learning foundation introduced in the classroom environment will be used to model and design an actual web application based on a real world Case Study, which will be provided to the students via by the instructor. The Case Study will be completed outside the training class. Learning Context

Delivery Modality The class will be taught in a classroom setting. The class will not be offered via an online classroom setting. Delivery for the classroom and instruction will be from instructor-led courses and be synchronous learning environments. Instructional Plan Template | Slide 8

Instructional Strategies (1) The following lectures and instructional content will be required for the classroom: Lecture: Introduction and history of Cultural Diversity Lecture: Design and development tools Lecture: Design, development, and best practices for Diversity Lecture: Design, development, and best practices for Client Administration Lecture: Design, development, and best practices for Patients Lecture: Additional industry resources and information Instructional Plan Template | Slide 9

Instructional Strategies (2) The following lectures and instructional content will be required for the classroom: Lecture: Introduction to a real world Use Case Study Lecture: Walkthrough of the design of the Use Case Study Lecture: How to deliver a training to peers Student Lab: Design and development of the Use Case Study Student Lab: Student presentation of Cultural Diversity Student Lab: Diversity issue reviews with classroom students Student Lab: Demonstration of a running Use Case Study Instructional Plan Template | Slide 10

Plan for Implementation The Cultural Diversity instructor-led class will be executed over a 16 week semester. Introduction and History of the Cultural Diversity – 1 week Design and development tools – 1 week Design and development of Diversity Components – 4 weeks Design and development Client Administration – 4 weeks Design and development for Patient Administration – 4 weeks Additional resources and information – 1 week Final exam – 16 week An instructor will be required for the class. The students will be provided all materials via handouts. This is a course that has not been previously offered at the university. Instructional Plan Template | Slide 11

Instructional Resources The course will require the following materials to develop the course content and lab materials: Modern PC with 2G Hz. dual core CPU with 2G Ram running Mac OSX 10.5 or later. Microsoft Applications Access to the Internet Projector and whiteboard for lectures Classroom environment capable of holding students Copies of all lecture materials Instructional Plan Template | Slide 12

Formative Assessment The following five formative assessment strategies will be incorporated into the implementation of the instructional plan. 1.Did all the lectures get authored? 2.Did the Use Case Study get authored? 3.Did an example design of the Use Case Study get completed? 4.Did an example implementation of the Use Case Study get completed? 5.Did all the design and development tools get installed properly? Instructional Plan Template | Slide 13

Evaluation Strategies A student survey (using a Likert scale) will be delivered to these students to measure the effectiveness of the class. The survey will focus on measuring whether the students learned the necessary foundation principles and best practices. The Case Study completed by the students can be reviewed by the instructors. Instructional Plan Template | Slide 14

Outcome Review Design Goals (measured with classroom participation): Students can identify the Cultural events generated by course materials. Students can identify causes of Cultural Misunderstanding and Diversity Issues. Students understand how to evaluate Diversity Studies. Design Goals (measured with Use Case Study exercises): Students can model, design, and build a Presentation on Cultural Diversity and from a Use Case Study. Instructional Plan Template | Slide 15

Recommendations Possible future recommendations and enhancement for this course may include: Introduction to course in On-line application. Advanced options for building Presentation Components. This may include the inclusion of instruction for using Virtual Classroom, Prezi, and Virtual Whiteboard technologies. This course needs to be continuously re-evaluated to ensure that changes in industry trends and technology shifts are accounted for and any necessary changes in the curriculum be considered to account for these changes.
