Hardware Configuration Guide Configuring Dongles and Creating Barcodes for Devices Used with VSC

Note: This document contains hyperlinks. Please play the PowerPoint presentation in order to use them.

Overview All medical devices used with the VSC application (e.g., monitors, scales, glucometers, etc.) need a 2D barcode. Devices that have wireless connectivity capability require a Bluetooth dongle as well. This document explains how to configure a dongle and print a 2D barcode for a medical device. It includes the following topics (click on each link to access): –Devices currently supported by VSCDevices currently supported by VSC –Dongle configurationDongle configuration –Printing the device barcodePrinting the device barcode –Powering Bluetooth dongles and connecting them to medical devicesPowering Bluetooth dongles and connecting them to medical devices –Enabling serial ports on medical devicesEnabling serial ports on medical devices –Guidelines on attaching donglesGuidelines on attaching dongles

Devices currently supported by VSC 1.CAS 740 Vital Signs Monitor 2.Dinamap Vital Signs Monitor 3.WelchAllyn LXi Vital Signs Monitor 4.Tanita WB100A scale 5.Detecto 758C scale* 6.Bayer Clinitek 50** 7.Precision Medisense Finger Glucose Monitor** *If scale has a serial port (RS232), it needs both a dongle and a 2D barcode. If no serial port exists, only a barcode is required. **No wireless connectivity, i.e. dongle is not required. Set up 2D barcode only.

Dongle Configuration: SD200/200L The dongle that is currently used with VSC is the Parani-SD200/200L

Dongle Configuration To configure the dongle, you need to download and install the ParaniWin Software from the following link:

Now, Turn on the dongle using its on/off switch. Then, connect the power jack to the power connector of the dongle (Parani- SD200) using the DC power adapter, USB power cable or DC power cable that is included in the package Then, connect the dongle to the serial port of your PC. Note: The dongles sometimes experience configuration issues when they have not been powered a long time. To fix this problem, keep the dongles powered for some time (until the ‘Standby’ LED is no longer red) before configuring the dongle.

Now, run the ParaniWin software. A window similar to the above will open. Leave the values to default and click OK.

Click the ‘Device Setting’ button in the left column. Select Mode 3. Enter the Baud Rate, Parity, and Stop Bit according to the table on the next slide. Click Apply. A ‘Configuration Complete’ message will appear. Do not disconnect the dongle yet.

Click the ‘Information’ tab on the left. Write down the Device Bluetooth Address (i.e., the MAC address). You need this address to print a barcode for the device. You can now disconnect the device.

To print a device barcode, you need 2 things: Printing Device Barcode 1.MAC address for Bluetooth dongle (that you wrote down in the previous step), separated by periods. 2.Barcode generator website (on Biomed site)Barcode generator website (on Biomed site) Example: D

Select the device and enter the MAC Address (every 2 digits separated by a period). The manufacturer, model #, baud rate, parity, bit, and stop bit will be auto-filled for you. Refer to Slide 3 2 Select type of barcode Select Device Enter MAC address, separated by periods: (e.g., A.12.34) 5 Submit

Printing Device Barcode When you click ‘Submit’, a window will pop up containing a 2D barcode like this: Print this barcode and affix it securely to the front of the device. Ensure that the barcode on the device has the same MAC address as the Bluetooth dongle on the device. 6 Print this

Powering Bluetooth Dongles and Connecting Them to Medical Devices Bluetooth dongles are able to acquire power the majority of the time from the device either directly in the serial port or through the custom RS232 cable. –Rarely, the dongle will not receive enough power and will not be able to transmit. –Whenever possible, our practice is to have bluetooth dongles plugged into the power using the AC-plug DC adapter. –Vital Signs monitors on rollstands should be equipped with power strips to plug in the vital sign monitor and the bluetooth radio power cords Power adapters come with the new bluetooth dongles

Enabling Serial Ports on Devices To make sure the dongles are able to get information through the medical devices, the serial ports on the devices need to be enabled. This can usually be found through the device’s service mode. Instructions are provided on the next two slides for enabling serial ports on: –WelchAllyn Spot LXi –Detecto 758C

Enabling Serial Ports on WelchAllyn Spot LXi Both serial ports on the Spot LXi must be enabled in service mode so that the Bluetooth dongle can receive power and transmit data from the monitor. To enable ports: 1.Turn off Spot LXi. 2.Press and hold the check mark button and the ‘MEM’ button at the same time. With these held, press the power button. The monitor will now turn on in service mode. 3.Using the arrow keys, navigate to ‘External Devices’. Use the check mark button to enter this menu. 4.Turn on the ‘Barcode Patient ID’ and ‘Printer’ settings to on. This will enable both serial ports. 5.Turn off the monitor to exit service mode.

Enabling Serial Ports on Detecto 758C The serial port at the back of the Detecto 758C wall mounted unit must be enabled so that the Bluetooth dongle is able to retrieve data from the device. To enable the port: 1.Turn off the Detecto 758C. 2.Unscrew the left end cap (your left, if facing the display). 3.You should see a black calibration jumper. Remove this jumper. 4.Press and hold the Lock/Release button, then press the On/Off button. The device should now display ‘Set9C’, indicating that the scale is now in service mode. In setup mode, you can navigate through each parameter using the Print/Enter key. 5.To change the value of a parameter, navigate to the number following the parameter, change the number by using the numeric keypad, and then press Print/Enter to enable the change. 6.Navigate to the P220 parameter and set it to 1. Also navigate to the baud parameter and set it to 3. 7.Turn off the scale. Replace the calibration jumper and end cap. or Print/enter key or Lock/release key

Guidelines on attaching dongles If you are using a custom-made adapter to attach the dongle to the monitor, use heavy duty Velcro (from Model Shop) to affix the dongle to the back or side of the monitor Wherever possible, dongles should be positioned such that: –their antennae are vertical –they do not hit the wall when the monitor swivels –their LED indicators (power and connection lights) are visible –they are accessible for troubleshooting purposes (e.g., enough clearance between dongle and wall) When affixing the Bluetooth dongle, avoid screwing it in too tightly. This can damage the pins and cause the dongle to short.
