Determining Relevance & Accuracy of Sources  Suitability  Scope- What is it discussing or covering?  Audience- Who is it geared towards?  Timeliness- When was it published?  Authority  Objectivity- Point of View/Organization/ Philosophy?  Documentation – Does it have a bibliography?  Scholarly Journal vs. Popular Magazine  Scholarly- published by and for the experts. Peer- Reviewed  Example: The American Journal of Public Health  Popular- Geared towards specific topic or idea, written by freelance writers  Example: Newsweek, Scientific America, The Atlantic Monthly

Primary vs. Secondary Sources  Primary Source: presents original research methods or findings for the first time.  Examples include: Diaries, Journals, Oral History, Photographs  Secondary Source: Secondary sources involve generalization, analysis, synthesis, interpretation, or evaluation of the original information.  Examples: Textbook, Magazine article, Encyclopedia

Tips for Effective Searching  Narrow searches with as much detail as possible  Use AND to narrow your search results  Use OR when you want to broaden your search results EXAMPLE  Broad Topic: Adoption in United States  Narrow down topic: Open Adoption Policies in United States  Search Terms: Open and Adoption and United and States  Using the AND will results in items that deal specifically with all these terms not just one or two

HELPFUL HINTS  Don’t be afraid to ask for help!  Try different search terms and concepts within your research topic!  Use the Resources Around You!-  I.E. Librarians: Ms. Lewis & Ms. Hageman  BE PATIENT WITH YOUR RESEARCH!
