2 Library Access 24/7 Did you know that you can do research without actually coming to the KC Library on campus? You have access to our databases and ebooks: As long as you are enrolled in the current semester at KC. As long as you have Internet access.

5 Logging in from Off-Campus When logging in from off-campus, you will need a username and password. Username: Last name Password: 1 st 4 of your last name, 1 st four of your first name, last 4 digits of your Social Security Number.

6 Off-Campus Log In So, if your name is Soft Kitty and your social security number is 123456789, your login will be: Username:Kitty Password:kittsoft6789

7 Finding Resources Books Ebooks

8 Books: Use the Catalog tab

9 Enter search terms. Click Search.

11 Click Kilgore College, Watson Library to see only those items in our library

12 Use the Call Number to find the book on the shelf

13 During Renovation If you need a book that is not in the temporary library, we can see if it is on the shelf in the Library building. We only go to the Library building once a day. You may have to wait 24 hours to get the book.

14 Interlibrary Loan If there is a book you need that we do not have, we can try to get it through Interlibrary Loan. Interlibrary loan takes time, so don’t wait until the last minute.

15 Ebooks: Click on e-Books under Find Books

16 Click the icon for ebooks Click here

17 Enter search terms and click Full Text Enter Search Terms Click here

18 Click Full Text to view the book

19 Click on Search within

20 Enter search terms

21 Click on a page number to go to that page

22 To get the citation, click on Cite

23 Scroll down to the citation format designated by your instructor

24 Remember the citation information! Use the Cite feature. Use EasyBib from the Library home page. Use MLA style to format your citations. – MLA is short for The Modern Language Association of America – The manual for MLA is called MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers – See the MLA tab in The Little, Brown Compact Handbook

Web. 5 Feb. 2015. Place your cursor at the end of the first line. Hit Enter. Now, you can indent the rest of the lines in the citation.

26 Why Use a Database? Anyone can create an internet site. – It can be true. – It can be fake. You have to verify internet information. – Who is the author? – Does the site want to provide information, or sell something? – When was it last updated?

27 Databases Provide thousands of articles from journals, newspapers, or books. The information is more accurate. Many articles are peer-reviewed. Your instructor prefers database articles to internet sites.

41 Since JStor doesn’t provide a citation, open a second tab and go to the Library Home Page.

42 Use EasyBib to format your citations properly.

43 EasyBib On the Library home page, scroll down to see Easy Bib on the right side. Click on this.

44 Select MLA

45 Select a tab If you are using a book source, click the tab for Book. If you are using a database, click the tab for Databases.  Use the drop down box to select the type of database.  In most instances, this will be Article published by database (pick this if unsure)

46 For JStor, select Journal Click on Manual cite.

47 Copy and Paste the information into the boxes.

49 Citation with URL *Ask your instructor if a URL is required. If it is, include it. If it isn’t, don’t use it.

55 Click on the Cite icon on the right side of the page Click this icon

56 Scroll down to MLA

57 Add Citations If you create several citations at a time, EasyBib will alphabetize them as you go. Then, you can copy and paste them to your Works Cited page.

58 Citations Each time you use someone else’s words or ideas, you must provide a citation to give credit to that person. You will include parenthetical citations in the text of your paper. For each citation, you will provide a corresponding bibliography.

59 Parenthetical Text Citations To document your research, provide the last name of the author and the page numbers on which the information appeared in the book or article used. Example: Heidegger sought to explain the act of being a person (Duignan 277).

60 If You Need Help with Research Call the KC Library and speak to a librarian. Come to the KC Library and speak with a librarian. Use the Ask-A-Librarian email service from the home page. – Make sure your return address is entered correctly – Your question should be answered the next working day
