Why you should consider taking these courses

 Computing occupations make up two-thirds of all projected new jobs in STEM fields, making Computer Science one of the most in-demand college degrees.  And computing is used all around us and in virtually every field.  But computer science is marginalized throughout education. 75% of U.S. schools don’t even offer computer science.  But… you are in luck! Burke has multiple computer based courses!

 Intro to Digital Design – 1 semester  Offers students a basic introduction to the Adobe suite including Photoshop, Flash, and Illustrator  Digital Media – 1 semester  Builds upon the knowledge gained in Intro to Digital design with more advanced Photoshop and Illustrator skills. Also include a basic introduction to Web Design through HTML and CSS coding and Web Animation.  Web Design – 1 year (dual enrolled with Metropolitan Community College)  Students will learn how to build and create Web Pages through HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery.  Computer Graphics (1-2 & 3-4) – 1 year  Allows students another opportunity to learn and expand their knowledge of the Adobe suite include Photoshop, Flash, and Illustrator  AP Computer Science – 1 year (opportunity to earn college credit through AP exam)  Students will learn C++ programming language and prepare to take the AP Computer Science exam to earn college credit for coding and programming skills.

 Nebraska currently has 3,356 open computing jobs (3.0 times the average demand rate in Nebraska).  Nebraska had only 383 computer science graduates in 2013; only 13% were female.  The average salary for a computing occupation in NE is $73,360, which is significantly higher than the average salary in the state ($41,080). So… If you like computers, are interested making money, and want a job when you get out of college consider exploring the field of computer science today by including some of these courses in your schedule today.

 Another class… not computers related offered here at Burke is Entrepreneurship.  If you are interested in being your own boss and starting your own company this is a great class to take.  Entrepreneurism is very important! Every year to keep our economy growing we need 1,000,000 new startups.  1 semester class easy to fit into your schedule.  This class is also Dual Enrolled with Metropolitan Community College so you can start earning college credit now.  You get to pick your own business idea and then work throughout the semester to plan your idea!
