2 Looking Ahead to Careers Why do people work? Main reason = to earn a living Most people choose jobs based on their interests and skills What are your hobbies/interests? Most people spend a large part of their lives working! 40 or more years on average

3 Looking Ahead to Careers Wouldn’t you rather spend that time doing something you enjoy?? Describe your “dream career”!

5 Matching Yourself to a J-O-B It’s a CHALLENGE! What subjects do you enjoy most in school? What subjects are you best at? What are your main interests? What are your talents? What are your values and goals? What do you want to do with your life? What is important to you? Do you want to help other people? Do you like to build things?

6 Still Can’t Decide???? Take an Aptitude Test – can help you discover your natural talents/abilities. AT predicts a person’s ability to learn certain skills.

7 Researching Careers Career Research is the process of finding out all you can about a field of work that interests you. Points of research are: Education required Responsibilities or duties expected Salary or wages Chances for promotion Working conditions Demand

8 Researching Careers Talk to people who currently work in the field Check for books in the library on careers

9 Choosing a Career You might find 2 or 3 areas that interest you – find out more about each to compare!

10 Preparing for Work The learning required to get and keep the kind of job you want. Job preparation means a better life for you and those you might have to support Job preparation means enjoyment and satisfaction without a HS education – your job opportunities are limited

11 Continuing to Learn Your education can continue after HS in many ways: College – community, 4-year and universities offer courses and degrees in a wide variety of fields www.ua.edu/www.ua.edu/ Vocational Trade Center – teaches skills for specific occupations www2.itt-tech.edu/st5/campus/school.cfm Get a Job with a company that teaches the skills you will need

12 Working Part-Time Working Part Time helps you: Learn to get along with co-workers and your boss Find out how you like a certain type of work Gain experience Become aware of job requirements and other qualities you need to acquire for full-time work
