SS8H11 The student will evaluate the role of Georgia in the modern Civil Rights Movement. b. Analyze the role Georgia and prominent Georgians played in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s; include such events as the founding of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Sibley Commission, admission of Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter to the University of Georgia, Albany Movement, March on Washington, Civil Rights Act, the election of Maynard Jackson as mayor of Atlanta, and the role of Lester Maddox. c. Discuss the impact of Andrew Young on Georgia. SS8H12 The student will explain the importance of significant social, economic, and political developments in Georgia since a. Evaluate the consequences of the end of the county unit system and reapportionment. b. Describe the role of Jimmy Carter in Georgia as state senator, governor, president, and past president. c. Analyze the impact of the rise of the two-party system in Georgia. d. Evaluate the effect of the 1996 Olympic Games on Georgia. e. Evaluate the importance of newimmigrant communities to the growth and economy of Georgia.

 Formed in 1960, when Georgia’s governor chose to close schools instead of following a federal order to desegregate them.  Their work was to make the transition from segregation to integration easier for schools.

 1961-they were the first African American students to enroll in the University of Georgia.

 Albany, Ga, had refused to desegregate schools  SNCC and NAACP organized protests  Arrests overwhelmed Albany and forced integration

 MLK’s “I have a dream” speech  Goal was to get jobs and freedoms for all citizens.

 1964  Forbade segregation in public facilities and businesses associated with the government.  Forbade discrimination based on sex or race in hiring, promoting, or firing.

 1974-became the youngest (35 yrs old) and first African American mayor of Atlanta.  Expanded Hartsfield Airport and his name was added to the airport after he died.  Helped get the 1996 Olympics for Atlanta

 Segregationist who became governor in 1967  Defeated Ellis Arnall.  Surprised everyone by appointing more blacks to state boards and commissions than all prior governors combined.  Turned out to be a good governor.

 the Supreme Court ruled that the system was unconstitutional.  It violated the “One person-one vote” policy  Now voters in cities (urban areas) have same power as rural areas.

 the Supreme Court ordered Georgia to redraw voting districts to make them fair.  Now voting districts are divided by population, not geography.

 Democratic Party held almost all power in Georgia for the 100 years after Reconstruction.  In the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, Republican candidates started gaining ground.  Georgia now has both parties represented.

 State Senator, Governor of Georgia, and only US President to come from Georgia.  A Democrat, he was president from

 Showed the world that Atlanta was an International City.  Games generated more than $5 billion for Atlanta and Georgia.  Sadly, a bomb was set off that killed 2 in Centennial Olympic park (Abortion protest)

 The increase in immigrant population from 1970 to the present has helped Georgia to become a vital economy in the US.  Agriculture, carpet and textiles, and construction jobs attracted immigrants.

 Aide to MLK, Jr., he became the mayor of Atlanta after Maynard Jackson  a US Congressman  US Ambassador to the United Nations.  Helped bring 1996 Olympics
