2 Brown v. Board of Education
The case was taken to the Supreme Court by Linda Brown and her parents, they felt that having separate schools for African American and white children was not fair. 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that separate was NOT equal. This overturns the decision in Plessy v. Ferguson

3 What was Georgia’s response
Georgia legislators modified the state flag in 1956. It was changed to include the Confederate battle flag.

4 SNCC Stands for Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee
A group of college students who held sit-ins at lunch counters and bus stations to protest segregation. They also tried to promote black voter registration in the South.

5 Sibley Commission Headed by Atlanta banker John Sibley
Recommended that each local district decide the desegregation matter It also recommended that the state repeal laws penalizing integrated schools.

6 Albany Movement It was a desegregation movement that took place in Albany Georgia. Several civil rights organizations participated including SNCC and the NAACP. Goal: to end all types of segregation in the city from buses and trains to libraries, hospitals and juries. By December 1961, more than 500 people had been arrested.

7 March on Washington August 1963
250, 000 people converged on Washington, D.C. Purpose: To demand equal rights for African American citizens Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , delivered his famous “I Have A Dream Speech” They wanted to have an impact on the vote to pass the Civil Rights Act Bill

8 Civil Rights Act of 1964 Prohibited discrimination based on color, race, or religion in places like restaurants, hotels, motels and theaters. Strongly discouraged the desegregation of public schools

9 First Black Mayor Atlanta makes history in 1973.
It elects its first black mayor, Maynard Holbrook Jackson. *Became the first African American mayor of a major southern city.
