Volunteers dedicated to maintaining and improving the Yough River Trail

Trail maintenance is our thing! The dedicated volunteers of the Westmoreland Yough Trail Chapter work throughout the year making sure the Yough River Trail, a roughly 10 mile section of the Great American Passage, is among the finest trail sections anywhere. The “Over the Hill Gang” is the group that actually does the work on the trail, while the other members are busy raising funds through various events. WYTC memberships are a major source of funds. All funds raised go directly to maintaining and improving the trail.

Spring cleanup Volunteers trim low branches and clean up downed twigs and limbs in the spring.

Clearing vegetation WYTC president Bob Hand trims vegetation encroaching the trail.

Chipping Gang members chip branches and twigs to keep the trail as debris free as possible.

New equipment Over the Hill Gang members inspect a piece of equipment purchased to help keep the trail surface smooth.

Curious rider A rider stops to see what’s going on as gang members test the new equipment.

Culvert project A contractor hired by the WYTC installs a culvert to facilitate drainage on a trail section that had been prone to flooding.

Spraying Several Over the Hill Gang members are state-certified to spray in an effort to keep insects under control.

Life on the Trail The trail is enjoyed by bicycle riders, walkers and runners throughout the year. An increasing number of these trail visitors come from around the world.

Most rides are about 20 miles round trip and often end with lunch at a restaurant along or near the trail. Contact Bill at or call the trail office at to find out when and where the rides will "This is a great opportunity to make new friends and feel comfortable riding along the trail," Hurrianko says.
