UWM CIO Office Negotiating a Senior Position Karyn M. Frick, Ph.D. Associate Professor Department of Psychology University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

UWM CIO Office My story: –Me: Untenured Associate Professor at Yale University –Husband: Untenured Associate Professor at New York Medical College –NIH-funded, productive labs –2 small children –The problems: No guarantee my dept. would allow me to be evaluated for tenure Uncertainty due to impending sale of NYMC

UWM CIO Office What I/we negotiated at UWM –For me: Tenured position in Psychology >$1,000,000 start up funds New laboratory construction Teaching release, summer salary, staff positions, all moving expenses for home and labs –For my husband: Tenured position in another department for my husband Excellent start up Teaching release, summer salary, staff positions

UWM CIO Office Before going out on the market: –Be as productive as possible –Seek mentoring from senior faculty –Publicity! Create opportunities to give talks at other universities Submit symposium proposals Alert your university’s PR office to new publications Submit review paper or special issue proposals to journals –Award nominations –Think carefully about whether to tell your students and staff that you’re on the market

UWM CIO Office Applying for senior positions –Make a personal contact for each position –Ask if any flexibility in level of hiring for advertised Assistant-level positions Interview from a position of strength –Best to interview when you don’t have to move On the interview: –“Why do you want to move?” Have an answer –Address tenure issues up front –Address spousal issues up front –Try to relax and treat more like a regular talk

UWM CIO Office Ask for what you need! –Don’t be afraid to ask, even if it’s big $$ Secure funding for postdocs, grad students, lab tech salaries and benefits –Ideally at least 2 years to make move attractive –Secure admission for existing grad students Secure start up for 2-3 yrs as with your current job Ask for renovations if necessary, teaching release, summer salary, moving lab and home (estimates!) Get it ALL (including lab, office space) in writing! Have a senior person to review your start up list Negotiating your offer:

UWM CIO Office Try to work with your current department –Make a list of the equipment you want to take –Find out university policy on buying out equipment –Work with current dept. chair and university to settle on equipment to move –Budget in start up for new version of contentious equipment Don’t be afraid to make new dept. wait for an answer –Make sure everything negotiated to your satisfaction
