Your Vision of Christian Education Philosophy of CE Biblical worldview – eg created in image of God to grow into likeness of Christ … Christology and the gospel central Education concerns whole of person – knowledge, attitude/values & skills Vision of nurturing Christ-centredness as we educate (not just having Christian component in an excellent education)

Parent expectations Not all parents will align with your vision – is your ratio ok (Church to unCh families)? What does your research tell you about why parents choose your school? Make your vision and values clear in your literature, on public occasions, in student management discussions with parents, etc. Deliverables must include academic and other priorities sought by parents

Importance of Vision Mission is our overarching purpose; vision is focused statement of mission accomplished Vision operates in the emotional and spiritual resources of the organisation, on its values, commitment & aspirations Vision goes beyond a simple statement – it permeates the organisation and is manifested in actions, beliefs, values and goals of your leaders [culture]

Leaders and vision Leaders have the ability to define vision and communicate it, then have the strategy to implement the vision by shaping the culture and inspiring ownership & commitment Inherited vision – may need to refresh in your own words Communication is important, but people (leaders) carry your vision ! Write down your school’s vision

How do you keep your vision alive? Your strategy to maintain the vision:

Keeping vision alive Keeping vision alive is about leaders constantly communicating the vision and shaping your school’s culture towards your vision Must constantly communicate your vision as it relates to ethos/culture, remind staff, parents and students of your goals and values Ripple effect from Principal out Vision drives policy & practice

Fundamentals of living the vision Provide a simple, succinct, clearly articulated statement of desired future state, something big to be a part of Have a picture of what it looks like, how people behave, what they value – written document about the culture of your school [list graduate outcomes] Leaders ‘leak’ vision & core values - talk about it in fresh terms to keep it relevant Display – symbols, posters, photos say “don’t forget who we are”

Vision drift – detection & attention Strategy then structure is driven by vision & values – factors influencing educational decisions, choice of programs, etc. Are you battling to maintain Christian focus in your culture eg Christian staff & staff devotions Staff focus – need professional rigor on values & student achievement measures Feedback on your reputation – are you known for your culture & holistic nurture?

Shape and guard your culture - staff Culture is shaped by leaders, living the beliefs & values, and being accountable Model the values among your leaders Staff lifeblood of school; carry your DNA Prune back to values – ruthlessly protect & maintain your standards ie discipline students and staff Assent & appearance of alignment do not mean alignment - want commitment not compliance from staff

Guard your culture - students Teach your vision and values formally Take opportunities to refer students to your worldview; know & respect other views Help students understand and appreciate your school culture – celebrate, praise, reward, promote (examples of ethos, not just achievement) Protect values with consistent rebuke & discipline (poor attitudes and motives, not just words and behaviour)
