Standard 3

Objective 2: Describe the nature of the changes that rocks undergo over long periods of time. a) Diagram and explain the rock cycle. b) Describe the role of energy in the processes that change rock materials over time. c) Use a model to demonstrate how erosion changes the surface of Earth. d) Relate gravity to changes in Earth’s surface. e) Identify the role of weathering of rocks in soil formation. f) Describe and model the processes of fossil formation.

Types of Rocks Igneous- Come from cooled magma and have crystals. Sedimentary- When sediments harden this layer often contains fossils Metamorphic- When igneous or sedimentary rock gets put under a lot of heat or pressure it turns into a different type of rock.

Gravity and Earth’s Surface How does gravity affect Earth’s surface? It makes water run causing erosion. It causes land slides. It makes rocks, boulders and unstable rock formations fall.

Weathering in Rock and Soil Formation List 3 things that cause weathering?

How Fossils Form ardipithecus-i-how-fossils-are-made/ Explain the different ways fossils form. What are cast fossils? Explain petrification? What are trace fossils? Name ways they gather info about the fossil

3:2 Quiz 1.Draw the rock cycle. 2.Explain how gravity change the surface of the earth. 3.How does erosion change the surface of the earth? 4.What causes soil to form? 5.List 4 types of fossils and how they are made.
