Presentation on theme: "Aim: How do rocks venture through their cycle?"— Presentation transcript:

1 Aim: How do rocks venture through their cycle?
Do Now: List the five tests we can use to identify a mineral.

2 Name the types of rocks that are found on Earth
Name the types of rocks that are found on Earth? How are these rocks classified? How can rocks change from one type to another?

3 How do we define the Rock Cycle?
The Rock Cycle – a “never ending” cycle that shows the different rock types and how they change from one type of rock into another (interrelated). What is the driving force of the rock cycle? Driving Force of the rock cycle: Energy from earth’s interior Solar radiation from the sun (Evaporation and precipitation deposits) Gravity These forces create the following processes: Compaction, weathering, erosion, melting, heat, pressure, and uplifting.

4 How are rocks different from one another?
Rock are different based on their origin (how it formed) and its mineral composition.

5 How can we define a rock? Rocks: composed of one or more minerals combined in some way Monomineralic Rocks: made of only one mineral Ex. Rock salt – only halite Ex. limestone – only calcite Polymineralic Rocks: made of more than one mineral Ex. Granite – quartz, mica, feldspar

6 How do Igneous rocks form?
form by cooling and solidification of hot melted molten rock (magma or lava). Minerals crystallize as they cool from a melt Magma – molten rock below earths surface Lava – molten rock above earths surface

7 How do Sedimentary rocks form?
2. Sedimentary Rocks – form by the compaction and cementation of layers of sediment.

8 How do Metamorphic rocks form?
3. Metamorphic Rocks – form when pre-existing rocks are changed by heat and/or pressure into new types of rocks. Recrystallize without melting (no melting)

9 The Rock Cycle Summary Activity
As pairs, you will have 3 minutes to answer the questions on the rock cycle. Write your answer into your notes. Sedimentary Heat and Pressure Metamorphic Igneous

10 Extra Summary

11 Extra, Extra Summary Describe what all rocks have in common.
Describe the difference between the formation of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. How are monomineralic and polymineralic rocks different? Describe the path a rock might experience from igneous to metamorphic.

12 The Rock Cycle Summary Activity
Directions: Base your answers on the rock cycle diagram. Write your answers into your notes. State the type of rock that would form at Rock A, B, and C. 2. Describe the path of formation an igneous rock would experience to form a sedimentary rock. 3. Bonus Question: State one process that would cause the high-grade metamorphism of Rock A.
