The Rock Cycle

Sedimentary Reaction  The Sedimentary process starts with weathering and erosion  This produces sediments, or fragments of rock.

 Sediments fall down to the lowest spot and are eventually buried. The sediments get compacted due to the weight of the sediments above them.

 A chemical process causes the sediments to cement together forming a sedimentary rock!  Sedimentary Rocks are always recycled rocks.

What sedimentary rocks look like.  Rock, sand, or mud fragments  Dull or Earthy shine  Feel rough or dusty  Contains fossils

Igneous Rocks  Magma is liquid rock material.  Magma that rises to the surface is called lava.

Extrusive Igneous Rocks  The lava at the surfaces cools and hardens very fast so crystals cannot form (or only very small crystals form.) Lava cools and hardens quickly and will also trap gases that form small holes in the rock.

Intrusive Igneous Rocks  Magma that moves away from heat sources will cool & harden slowly forming large crystals.  All igneous rocks must be uplifted or weathered to reach the surface where it gets eroded.

What does igneous rock look like  Crystals  Holes  Feel rough  Shiny  glassy

Metamorphic Processes  Any rock that gets buried very deep will undergo heat & pressure. This causes the minerals and crystals to “line up”. This is called foliation.

Metamprohic Rocks  All metamorphic rocks must be uplifted or be weathered to reach the surface.

What do metamorphic rocks look like.  Bigger crystals  Foliation  Smooth Shiny.
