Background to the Novel ► The Cay is a realistic fiction story set in the Caribbean in the midst of World War ll. ► Phillip and his mother leave Curacao on a ship bound for the United States because German Uboats are bombing ships in the area. ► The war, which started in Europe in 1939, has spread tremendously. Holland, the country of Phillip's friend Heinrich, has fallen to Nazi Germany. The United States has been drawn into the efforts to stop Hitler. ► How does this affect the tiny island of Curacao which is owned by the Netherlands?

Continue… ► It houses oil refineries for oil being taken from Venezuela. This oil is used by war ships. Germany undertakes an effort to stop the shipment of oil to the Allied forces by mining harbors and blowing up ships.
