Reflecting on Reading Provides an opportunity for the reader to share their thoughts about a book, play, short story or poem.

Reflecting on Reading When readers reflect on what they read, they… o Check comprehension o Does the reader understand the events? o Question the text o Why did this happen? o Make predictions, inferences and connections o I can relate to this because…

When does reflection occur? Reflecting on reading can occur during and after reading. A reader may stop to make a note about a character’s action or an event that occurred. A reader may reflect on what was just read and jot down important plot events in their reading log.

Reflecting on Reading Readers may also participate in or complete one of the following to reflect on what has been read: – Small group discussion – Literature circles – Reading log or reflection journal

Reading log Can be informal or formal Include thoughts that occur while reading or after.

Oral reflection Sharing thoughts in a group – Small group discussion with two to three where ideas can be shared. – Larger groups like literature circles where readers may concentrate on specific questions.
