Share changes to the curriculum Share changes to assessment arrangements What does assessment look like at St. Bon’s? What information will be given to parents? Aims

Changes to the Curriculum Expectation of all children is higher ‘Keep Up’ Curriculum Curriculum is banded within year groups Government has set knowledge and skills for every subject in each year group

Key changes in English Writing: –Increased challenge, stamina for writing –Focus on grammar and punctuation Identifying grammatical features as well as using it for effect –Proof-reading and editing Reading: –Emphasis on reading widely for pleasure, re-reading books, reading aloud to an audience –Learning of poetry (including reciting poetry) Spelling: –Statutory lists for Years 3-6 –Specific spellings KS1 e.g. days of the week, prefixes and suffixes –Pupils expected to write sentences dictated by the teacher

Fluency

Reasoning Year 5 0*3 r * 7)581

Problem solving Year 1 Jan has put 3 number cards in a bag. She picks the number 8 and says ‘this is the biggest’. Then she picks the number 4 and says ‘This is the smallest’. What number could be on the 3rd card?

Problem solving Year 6 Give pairs a rule e.g. x3 – 1 Taking turns, each child picks a number from the grid and works out the first 5 terms. If they are correct they can place a counter over that number. The first to get three in a row wins

Problem solving Year Jan has put 3 number cards in a bag. She picks the number 8 and says ‘this is the biggest’. Then she picks the number 4 and says ‘This is the smallest’. What number could be on the 3rd card?

Changes to the Assessment Arrangements No longer any levels (2b, 4b) Children working within year group bands (more explained on the next slide) Year 2 and Year 6 will sit new SATs in May (Specific information evenings for these year groups to follow) Schools have chosen which tracking system to use to monitor pupils’ progress. Assessments arrangements are interim this year.

What are we doing at St. Bon’s? We are using ‘Target Tracker’ programme to monitor children’s progress through the new curriculum We moderate teacher’s judgements in school and also work with local schools to ensure that our system is robust We use information from Target Tracker to identify pupils who are not on track and give them extra support

How are we assessing our pupils? We are using bands and steps. Band 1 –Year 1 Band 2 –Year 2 Band 3 –Year 3 Band 4 –Year 4 Band 5 –Year 5 Band 6 –Year 6

Steps = Progress BB+WW+SS+ B = Beginning to work within that band W= Working within that band S = Secure within that band National expectations for the end of each year are for the children to be secure within the year group band. However all children will be at different points depending on ability but also depending on how much of the curriculum has been covered.

How does it work at St Bon’s? Teachers are continually assessing pupils’ work which informs everyday teaching and support for children in the classroom Formative Assessment Day to day assessment of children Learning objectives for each lesson help us to assess the level of understanding Children are also involved in assessing their own learning Summative Assessment (3 times per year) is informed by: Observed group/individual activity Tests (Maths and English) Independent piece of writing or problem solving activity Results from these are used to inform Target Tracker and identify children’s gaps

What are we doing to ensure children are progressing well? We monitor good quality teaching and learning through… Learning Walks Book Scrutiny Observations Pupil Progress meetings once a term Planning checks Provision mapping and interventions

What information will be given to parents? Information about where your child is within their year group band at the March Parents’ Evening You will be informed whether your child is on track to meet the year group expectations Current Y2 are the only year to have had the new curriculum from the start
