1 Reading in KS2 “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”
Frederick Douglass

2 How We Teach It! The expectation is that most children will be off the banded reading scheme by year 3 and ‘free reading.’ We use Accelerated Reader to track progress in reading and to ensure that book choice is accurate and appropriate for pupils. Higher order reading skills such as inference and deduction, will be specifically covered once a week during guided reading. The ZPD scores your child attains in STAR reading tests determines the level of books your child can access.

8 Record and sign your child’s reading record
Diaries are checked once a week – please alert teacher if messages are written in. Help your child select books of an appropriate level.

12 Writing & the New Curriculum
Standards have been raised, expectations have been raised, assessment is a meet all criteria and not a ‘best fit’ judgement.

13 Writing for a purpose – it has to be real
Spellings given to learn will be tested in an application test and children always encouraged to use a dictionary Children need to take ownership of their own writing. Editing, drafting and redrafting are skills we teach in order to promote independence when writing.
