Steps to writing a quality essay

In other words, read and analyze it!  Underline the main idea  Circle the action verbs  Make sure you understand what the question is asking you to do!

Get your thoughts on paper!  Brainstorm a list of ideas for the essay.  Use a graphic organizer such as a word web, cluster map, Venn Diagram, cause/effect map, box or fish chart, etc.  Come up with a thesis statement (a statement of the main idea for the paper)

 Create an outline.  Use a graphic organizer such as a sandwich chart.  Identify the examples or supporting topics for each body paragraph.  Keep ideas that relate to personal experience, past readings, or past events.  Eliminate ideas that are not related, or that you don’t understand or know enough about.

 Begin with your thesis statement or another starter such as ◦ A quote ◦ A personal story ◦ Interview style ◦ A question ◦ A metaphor to emphasize throughout the essay

 Write the introduction.  Write the body paragraphs. ◦ Be sure to include detailed examples to support your main idea. ◦ Don’t forget transitions between paragraphs. Write the conclusion. Restate the thesis. Share an insightful comment.

Re-read the essay for sentence structure and coherence.  Is my thesis statement clear?  Do my body paragraphs support this main idea?  Is it well-organized with a clear beginning, middle, and end?  Do the ideas progress logically?  Do I have sufficient details as support?  Is my vocabulary skillful and appropriate?  Are my sentences clear and fluent (not run-on, fragments, or choppy)?  Do I use consistent verb tense? Subject-verb agreement? Proper grammar and mechanics?  Yes? Then, turn it in!
