UTPA 2012: A STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THE DIVISION OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS Approved by the Vice President for External Affairs December 22, The six UTPA goals addressed by this Outcome Directed Planning map are:  Provide students with a quality educational experience that enables them to complete their educational goals in a timely fashion.  Become an outstanding research institution, emphasizing collaborative partnerships and entrepreneurship.  Enhance UTPA’s engagement with the community to meet challenges and maximize opportunities.  Collaborate with P-12 schools to enlarge the pool of applicants who are personally prepared and academically qualified for higher education.  Infuse Inter-American and global perspectives throughout the University community.  Optimize institutional effectiveness and efficiency consistent with high quality organizational standards. Identify capacity to give and interest to give.  Create the marketing message why scholarships are important.  Cultivate current scholarship donors so that they can give more.  Contact alums for possible giving (either corporation or alum).  Identify best practices from other universities.  Install a development officer in every college.  Find champions to give and solicit from others. Increase the amount of student scholarships support. Increase student employment and internships.  Partner with more corporations and businesses to educate them on our quality students. Create events to bring corporations to the Valley.  Have a placement person in every college.  Identify funding sources for internships.  Increase awareness of internships. Both paid and unpaid. Awareness for both internal and external constituents.  Offer more workshops for proper attire, resume writing, etc. GOAL: Provide students a quality educational experience that enables them to complete their educational goals in a timely fashion. Increase opportunities for service learning. Augment funding to support quality faculty (both new and current).  Investigate which schools need faculty support and types of support. GOAL: Provide students a quality educational experience that enables them to complete their educational goals in a timely fashion. (SLIDE 2) Objectives Strategies Create additional venues for UTPA students to receive a quality educational experience.  Include student-oriented events such as Science Bowl, FESTIBA.  Create marketing message for increase in student campus involvement. (SLIDE 1)  Create an endowed chair for COHSHS.  Ensure all current endowed faculty chairs/professorships are active.  Create an endowment to provide stipends to graduate students.  Create opportunities, such as: Host events. Invite guests as commencement speakers. Invite guests as keynote speakers. Ask faculty to shadow corporate/ government reps. Ask faculty to present to corporate/government reps.  Provide guidance to faculty on proper stewardship of representative. Attract major corporations and government agencies to the campus to provide opportunities for faculty to attain or increase research funding. Ex.: Howard Hughes Foundation, Pfizer, Border Consortium.  Search for new partnerships.  Participate in consortiums.  Search for funding opportunities.  Create or establish new research centers.  Collaborate with other research centers within the academic division. Improve “The University Experience” with the community.  Continue the Branding initiative.  Continue the “Making a difference” campaign.  Recognize donors/constituents.  Promote success stories of students, alumni, faculty, etc.  Be proactive to emerging issues on campus.  Work with university departments to address issues affecting our visitors. (SLIDE 1) Increase seminars and events focusing on Inter- American and global perspectives.  Host Latino American Health Conference.  Participate in university- wide international events and activities.  Participate in events held internationally.  Work with the International Women’s Board to increase funding for study abroad programs. Expand funding for study abroad programs. Objectives Strategies Support faculty for research on dealing with Inter-American and global issues.  Raise funds for programs such as CBEST and RYPI.
