9 elements to Digital Citizenship

What are the benefits of living in a digitally connected world?

 Global learning  Information at our fingertips  Greater connectivity  Creativity

What are the dangers/costs of living in a digitally connected world?

 Digital footprints/Digital Tattoos  Reduced Privacy  Easy Hacking  Vulnerability Increased  Lack of responsible/appropriate use can lead to many long term consequences

Perception vs. Reality

Consider your audience and your source AudienceSource InternetEveryoneReliable/Unreliable Social MediaEveryoneReliable/Unreliable Teacher, friend, loved one, everyone Reliable/Unreliable TextFriend, loved one, everyone Reliable/Unreliable

Why do you think the internet was invented?

 To facilitate communication between Universities, laboratories and the Department of Defense  It has greatly changed  We are not preparing you for a cruel world, we are helping you make it better. It is our internet.

Why don’t we want our parents, grandparents, teachers and Deans to know what we post?

 It is not who we are  It is not who we want them to see  We know it is wrong  We haven’t used the resources appropriately

How do we keep our reputation/ourselves safe?

 The best advice I can give is think of the person you would hate to disappoint (ie: grandma, parent, cousin, peer, younger sibling,…).  If you would not say it in front of them – don’t put it on the internet for everyone to see forever because it is really not a full picture of you.  Remember, what you poist is a snap shot of you in a moment of emotion which could linger for the rest of your life regardless of how much you may have grown or changed.  Is it helpful or harmful?  Helpful- Proceed  Harmful- Stop

When you are in a strong emotional state

 Step Away B4 you post (self – management)  Unplug  Use the Deans/Detective Frey/Parents Test  If I can’t show it to the above people, don’t post or do it.

Know your rights and Limitations  Nothing is 100% private or public  As a student you have limited freedom of speech  The iPads are the District 95’s not yours (they are loaned to you like a text book)  We can restrict for inappropriate use  Beware of illegal VPNs ---these carry heavy school consequences and can have legal consequences as well  Anything on the iPad is public because they are district owned  Know your handbook for policies on cyber bullying and bullying =7&list=PLui3i0IG-_tFy8Ko_R82ThjGHu7pjBMzC
