 Label today’s warm-up “Folktale: Anansi Tries to Steal All the Wisdom in the World”  After you watch the video, answer these questions: 1) Have you heard this story or something similar before? If you’ve heard something similar, then explain what it was. 2) What is the lesson or moral we are supposed to learn from this story?

 “Folk” = people  “Lore” = stories  Definition: The traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through the generations by word of mouth.  There are many types of folklore, and many well-known stories, such as Anansi the Spider.

 A short story, typically with animals as characters, conveying a moral.  Examples: Aesop’s Fables  The Tortoise and the Hare  The Boy who Cried Wolf  The Ant and the Grasshopper

 A narrative that explains why something is the way it is.  In French, “pourquoi” = why? (cognate of por que)  Examples: Just So Stories Tinga Tinga (African)  Why the Giraffe has a Long Neck  Why the Crocodile has a Bumpy Back

 A story with unbelievable elements, related as if it were true and factual. Examples:  Uncle Remus Tales  Brer Rabbit  Brer Fox  Big Foot Tales  Paul Bunyan

 For millions of years, people have been passing on these stories.  Folklore is ever present in arts and literature.

 Read the folklore assigned to your group, and discuss as you go.  Use your graphic organizer to keep track of your thoughts as you read.  Pay special attention to…. Symbols Recurring images or ideas Characters Themes or Messages of the Stories  After reading, you will create a poster about your group’s folklore with any of the above information or other things you find important. Please make sure you include both VISUAL and TEXTUAL.

 Somebody (Who is the main character?)  Wanted (What did the main character want?)  But (What is the problem?)  So (How did the main character try to solve the problem?)  Then (What was the resolution to the story?
