ankle avulsion fracture By Mariah House 6 th Period 5/1/2015

anatomy overview the ankle has three major bones: 1.talus: allows your ankle to move up and down 2.tibia: also know as the shin bone, and forms the knee joint with the femur and the ankle joint 3.fibula: stabilizes the ankle and supports muscles of the lower leg

description of injury o Avulsion fractures can happen anywhere in the body but are most common in the ankle area o When the ankle is twisted or sprained, a force is passed through the ligaments or tendons resulting in either 2 things : 1. The ligament or tendon will tear causing a sprained ankle 2. The ligament or tendon is pulled so hard on the bone avulsion fracture that a piece of it will come off causing a avulsion fracture

symptoms Symptoms of both ankle sprains and ankle avulsion fractures are similar. The difference between the two can only be seen with an MRI or x-ray. immediate pain in ankle area swelling bruising tenderness inability to apply weight and pressure to ankle stiffness

x-ray of ankle avulsion fracture

diagnosis 1. your doctor will complete a physical examination of your ankle 2. imaging tests such as an MRI or an x-ray will be ordered to get a closer look on the inside of the injury

treatment the treatment of an ankle avulsion fracture will be determined on the severity of the injury. some treatment options include: cast and crutches for 6-8 weeks elastic bandages and braces ibuprofen for pain elevating your leg when possible plenty of rest and no weight on your ankle in severe cases: physical therapy
