Who needs detector hardware (until 2025)? ATLAS LHCb KM3 ALICE Darwin/XENON ILC/CLIC Virgo/GW Auger ? medical imaging, beam therapy

What could Nikhef offer? -ongoing activities with Nikhef program groups -Encap tracker: support -ROBINNP -LHCb upgrade -CO 2 cooling -ongoing projects in Nikhef (in Detector R&D) -Pixel detectors: -pixel chip design -Edgeless detectors -Through Vias -3D -Si/ZnTe -GridPix TPC -Gossip -ReLaXd, SPIDER -Trixy -Tipsy

Trends 1.Front-end electronics shifts towards (inside) detector 2.Detector or Sensor: integration with front-end circuitry 3.Digitization as early as possible: in sensor 4.Granularity: pixelisation (even in calorimeters, lumi monitors) so ALL detectors 1.MEMS technology: 1.new materials & processes; atomic layers, ultra thin membranes; nano tech 2.Moore’s Law: Si tech continues (for us) 1.towards 35 nm technology 2.not in speed 2.Closer relation with industry

Consequences of trends -be active in -(pixel) chip design (detectors, sensors) -MEMS technology: 3D (detectors, sensors) -new materials: composites (detector support) -new bottlenecks: -digital data communication: rate, low power, low volume, rad hard -radiation hardness: unique problem for HEP experiments -financing R&D: collaboration with industry

My Conclusions Future detectors & sensors are mostly pixel (Si) CMOS chips Atlas/Nikhef should define/form Upgrade group (with $$) Nikhef should define/form ILC/CLIC group (with $$) (specialised) manpower for MEMS tech and Optical Lab Funding, Industry, Topsectors: HEP has few common elements Modern Detector R&D must be (partly) supported by industry since 1 st stream $$ is little
