Technology and R&D Summary and next steps Burkhard Schmidt

Concept of the talk The idea is to briefly summarize the main R&D aspects for the areas of technology presented in the workshop and to include in the presentation also main points which came up in the discussion. In addition, I intend to mention briefly other R&D relevant for the four large LHC experiments, e.g. Particle ID for the ALICE and LHCb upgrades. In a 20min talk this leaves about 3 min or 3-5 slides per topic, which is not much. More discussions are needed in the coming weeks with the various Preparatory Group chairs.

R&D and Next Steps on Tracking Key points on R&D for radiation hard sensor material and technology – relation / synergies with RD50 – developments for ATLAS and CMS pixels – monolithic pixels for ALICE R&D for thermal management – evaporated CO 2 cooling (ATLAS and CMS) – integrated microchannel cooling (ALICE and LHCb) R&D for tracking electronics to be covered under electronics R&D

R&D and Next Steps on Calorimetry Key points of R&D for CMS End-Cap calorimeters – radiation tolerant Crystal sampling / Plastic Scintillator sampling calorimeters – Particle Flow / Imaging Gas Sampling Calorimeter; Dual Read Out, Cerenkov/Scintillator Sampling. More general R&D aspects/synergies in relation to work on-going in CALICE. R&D for calorimeter electronics to be covered under electronics R&D

R&D and Next Steps on Muon Systems R&D on Novel Gaseous Detector Technology – Relation /synergies with RD51 CMS developments (for forward region) – GEM detector – Glass RPC ATLAS developments (for New Small Wheel) – sTGC (with reduced gap between cathode and strip) – Micromegas – sMDT (thinner MDT tubes) R&D for Muon system electronics to be covered under electronics R&D

R&D and Next Steps on Electronics Importance of common projects and workshops Very deep sub-micron technologies for IC Design to ensure radiation hardness High density and low mass interconnect and hybrid technologies R&D on efficient power distribution systems and low power design techniques Low power, high speed electrical and optical links Modular electronics standard for high speed data processing in the back-end electronics

R&D and Next Steps on Trigger DAQ R&D for Trigger – Increase of rate from Level-0 to HLT – L1 complexity vs. HLT input rates – L1 Track Trigger and improvements to L1 Calo. & Muon Triggers R&D on HLT and DAQ – Event building architectures – Network Switches – GPUs and use of New Processors in HLT – HLT on the Cloud and Simulation of HLT

Upgrade related R&D not covered otherwise ALICE – TPC with GEM readout (for Particle ID) LHCb – Time of Light detector (TORCH) for Particle ID – Scintillating Fibre Tracker
