4 WP1 WP2 WP3 WP4 WP5 COORDINATOR WORK PACKAGE LDR RESEARCHER ACEOLE MID TERM REVIEW CERN 3 RD AUGUST 2010 It is necessary to test all chips before the expensive bump bonding step Only want to pay to bond good chips Based on a commercial probe station Uses image processing to get the alignment perfect Probes 5 times faster than a human running the system Can be left to test a wafer on it’s own Technical – Medipix/Timepix Wafer Testing

5 WP1 WP2 WP3 WP4 WP5 COORDINATOR WORK PACKAGE LDR RESEARCHER ACEOLE MID TERM REVIEW CERN 3 RD AUGUST 2010 Technical – Timepix in the LHCb VELO Upgrade Timepix in the VELO upgrade Square pixels – good imaging, but also for forward trackers High active area - Single layer required => low mass detector system Competition with a Fermilab designed chip. I ran several testbeams where we proved for the first time that Timepix was a (VERY) capable particle tracker. Developed a new particle twelescope based on these chips. Timepix derived VELOpix is now the baseline for the LHCb upgrade

8 WP1 WP2 WP3 WP4 WP5 COORDINATOR WORK PACKAGE LDR RESEARCHER ACEOLE MID TERM REVIEW CERN 3 RD AUGUST 2010 Practical Increased speed and accuracy of testing has made more chips available to Medipix community Freed up time at CERN for people to do more interesting things For PANalytical Increased reliability of supply is important for a commercial partner For Me A very good introduction to Medipix systems Nice starting project for my Matlab training Good learning experience for hardware integration and automation Learnt that QC is NOT an easy thing to automate Impact – Automatic Testing of Wafers

9 WP1 WP2 WP3 WP4 WP5 COORDINATOR WORK PACKAGE LDR RESEARCHER ACEOLE MID TERM REVIEW CERN 3 RD AUGUST 2010 For the Community LHCb chose the EU supported Timepix chip over the American Fpix as a direct result of my work on the testbeams Jump started design activity and lead to the current advance VELO design Pushed Medipix back into HEP – now looking at other experiments For Me Significantly raised my profile at CERN and in HEP community Lead to new opportunities and a new direction as a Pixel detector specialist Also lead directly to a new job… Impact – VELO Upgrade

10 WP1 WP2 WP3 WP4 WP5 COORDINATOR WORK PACKAGE LDR RESEARCHER ACEOLE MID TERM REVIEW CERN 3 RD AUGUST 2010 I am now employed by Glasgow to work on the VELO upgrade I am VELO Upgrade infrastructure coordinator ACEOLE gave me excellent opportunities: In training, above and beyond a normal postdoc position To improve my Career profile To work based at the centre of the world (in HEP) To access the unmatched resources and expertise at CERN My only Complaint…. It was all over too soon :-( Outcomes and Reflection
