Douglas Coupland is a Canadian writer and artist who lives in West Vancouver, British Columbia. Coupland was born in Baden Soellingen, West Germany on December 30 th, Born to Dr. Douglas Coupland, a medical officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force and Janet Coupland. Graduated from Sentinal Secondary School in West Vancouver Graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 1984.

After graduating from Emily Carr University of Art and Design he went on to study at the European Design Institute in Milan, Italy and the Hokkaido College of Art and Design in Sapporo, Japan. While in Japan he became an established designer. Skin condition from climate forced him to return to Vancouver. Began writing for magazines to pay bills Once Coupland became a writer he stated, “there is nothing else I would rather do.”

Literary Movement: Post-Modernism/Modernism Works themed around post-modern religion, human sexuality, and popular culture. Also writes of loneliness, finding your way/meaning in life, and seeking answers. Literature pieces: 13 Novels 7 Non-fiction books Several screenplays/dramatic works Handful of short stories.

First novel, Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture was published in 1991 and became an International bestseller. Popularized the term Generation X. After his second novel Shampoo Planet, Coupland compiled a series of small books into a book titled Life After God in 1992.

Wrote for Wired Magazine in Inspired Microserfs in Coupland began working on his non-fiction pieces in All Families are Psychotic, Eleanor Rigby, 2004 Jpod, 2006.

Honorary degree from the University of British Columbia on May 27, 2010 Honorary Doctor of Letters from Simon Fraser University in Honorary Doctor of Letters from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Coupland is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts
